2011 Proving Grounds Road-Course discussion.

This year for the 2011 MAPerformance Proving Grounds, we have the road course for Saturday (June 25th 2011) only. There are 2 options as to how we use the road course. I'd love to hear feedback from those interested in attending.

Option 1:
Open Lapping Day (All Day)
Cost Per entry: $165
About 2 hours of track time per entry

------------------

Option 2:
The day would be split into 2 events

Morning:
9am - 2pm - Open Lapping
Cost of $110 per entry with 1 hour of track time

Afternoon:
2pm-6pm - High Speed Auto-X (Timed Lap)
$90 per entry
about 5-8 timed runs per entry

----------------------------

Thoughts? Ideas? Feedback? Feel free to let me know!

Re: 2011 Proving Grounds Road-Course discussion.

Kind of a toss up, but I may lean toward open lapping the entire time.

Re: 2011 Proving Grounds Road-Course discussion.

I've came up with an option3:

What about 9-3 open lapping.

9:00 – 9:20 – Group A
9:20 – 9:40 – Group B
9:40 – 10:00 – Group C
10:00 – 10:20 – Group D
10:20 – 10:40 – Group A
10:40 – 11:00 – Group B
11:00 – 11:20 – Group C
11:20 – 11:40 – Group D
11:40 – 12:00 – Group A
12:00 – 12:20 – Lunch Break
12:20 – 12:40 – Group B
12:40 – 1:00 - Group C
1:00 – 1:20 – Group D
1:20 – 1:40 – Group A
1:40 – 2:00 – Group B
2:00 – 2:20 – Group C
2:20 – 2:40 – Group D
3:00PM - Timed Laps, end at 6pm

Then just $165 per entry.

15 cars per heat, 60 car cap.

Thats 1 hour, 20 min of track time plus your timed laps. I dont really like splitting the event into two.

I see 40 minutes of lap time plus the timed laps per group?

Re: 2011 Proving Grounds Road-Course discussion.

Option 3 sounds good, in general.

How would the timed portion work? Would you have two or three cars on the track at a time? I'm not sure how there'd be enough time, otherwise.

Dang, this kinda sucks. I was hoping to be able to do the trifecta this year: autox, drag, and short track, all in one weekend. Any way this can still be possible? Not sure what the rest of the schedule is like.

You could drag race on Sunday.

Wasn't the so-called auto-x just timed laps last year, anyway? I didn't participate but that was what I had read.

Thats 1 hour, 20 minutes per group, plus your timed laps. Should be plenty of seat time. by the end of the day, i assure you and your car will be tired.

The timed laps will be similar to a parking lots auto-x. Standing stop start, and basically a full lap with a flying finish. We'll send out a car every 20 seconds or so. Our timing can handle a 7 car sequence. Depending on the turnout, we should be able to get 3-4 timed runs in, maybe more.

Do you get to do a lap or anything before the standing start to warm up the brakes?

nope. its HSAX style.

brake shouldn’t need to be warmed up, i've used some really aggressive pads and they all worked immediately. Tires however are a different story. There shouldn’t be too much downtime between runs.

All depends on the tire you're using. This is run just like any other HSAX event. I'd love to run full flying laps, but that would raise the cost of the events tremendously. everyone would need to rent a transponders.

I've never had any brakes not work when cold. I've used PFC's, Carbotechs, Hawks, Ferrodos, RacingBrakes, all of them worked the same cold to hot.

The Timed laps are purely optional.

I like option 3, and the idea of road course on Saturday, drag racing on Sunday. That way if I blow my shit up on the strip, I still had got my weekend's worth.

I personally run R888's. Another buddy that would most likely attend runs NT01's. i've went out on cold tires and its not fun. Typically when i think auto-x its max 40mph.

Any rough idea the effect on cost to run flying laps? At MAM if i recall it was only like $10-20 to rent a transponder for the day.

I've been on rev limiter in 2nd gear at autocrosses a few times (numerous venues and even SCCA events) and that is over 60mph, once shifted to 3rd for a brief moment before braking and back to 2nd.

Re: 2011 Proving Grounds Road-Course discussion.

I know last year was open lapping saturday, not sure what went down sunday.

Anyways, typically most the auto-x stuff around here is lower speed. Point being is your not running corners or sweepers @ 60+mph. Went out on cold tires last year @ MAM and that was a handful and wont intentially be doing that again anytime soon. Whats the reason for not having a 2 day event this year?

Re: 2011 Proving Grounds Road-Course discussion.

Autocross tires are designed to heat up quickly. For example, this is why Dunlop revised the original Z1 and made the Z1*Spec.
