So my mom e-mails me today and says that she would like to find herself a Fiero. I know that there are a few Fiero "experts" around here and personally I know next to nothing about them. Could someone give me some of the basic low-down about Fieros? Of course I will be doing some research across the internet and reading, but I'd like to hear from some of you guys also.
Thanks! :bounce:

Fiero is an acronym for On-FIRE.
The letters are just switched around.
Hope this helps. :P

They seem to like burning to the ground. They were cool....back in the 80's when they looked like Ferarri's. If she was to get one though, pick up an 88-89. If all she is looking for is a cute little summer car tell her to go for a Miata instead.

You'll never guess what happened! My Fiero caught on fire! :bounce:

Fiero Facts:

Fires were a problem with the Fieros equipped with 2.5 92hp iron duke motors. They had bad connecting rods that would go through the block and spray oil all over the exhaust. Or people wouldn't maintain them and the oil would leak on the header. GM fix these problems by putting an exhaust sheild around the exhaust header to divert the oil.

Fieros were the safest cars is crash tests when the were built. The Fiero tied the volvo in every occupancy safety crash test. Don't beleive me look it up http://www.crashtest.com/explanations/arch...chive/crash.htm

Fieros are built with a space frame design. None of the body panels are load bearing, It has a complete frame not unlike a tubular race car. This is also why Fieros are pigs weighing in at 3000 lbs for the GTs. Very stiff car.

Fieros are probably the second most unreliable car next to DSMs Most Fieros have been thouroughly thrashed by their previous owners. Low milage Fieros will need tons of little maintenance things done to them as they are 20 year old cars.

If your mom likes pain and is willing to put up with maintenance similar to a DSM. By all means get a Fiero. Otherwise I'd recommend a Miata.

BTW, there are decent Fieros out there, they are just hard to find.

Don't let me scare you away, there is a pretty big Fiero Club right here in Minnesota that is willing to help other owners out from finding a good car to all kinds of repairs. Your best bet is to visit www.fieroforum.com and start there. Then I would contact the President of the Minnesota Fiero club at www.mn.fiero.org. They are great group of people and can point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

Jim

OMG, funniest thing I've read in a while!

Being a Fiero owner I've heard it all, you develope a pretty thick skin! :razz2:

BTW, when Fieros start on fire it melts the doors shut so you can't get out. I hear that one at least once a week.

Here is a quick pic of my car.

I remember Tony's red GT caught on fire because the plug wires were routed wrong and ended up rubbing on a bracket.

Fiero's aren't THAT bad. If you are into cars and fixing them up, they are fun little projects. I can't begin to remember how many hours I spent under some of Tony's projects. The motors are really easy to take out and put in though. They definately have a HUGE following and they have nearly limitless things you can do with them (except carry more than one extra person).

Note: I am not pushing Fiero's here but I won't bash them either.

Stock Fieros are slow, but they handle pretty good. Most Fiero owners aren't necessarily about performance, they are more about driving something unique. There is also the whole fact that anyone who remembers the 80's pretty much hate them. :razz2:

The quickest stock Fiero will run 15.0 flat in the 1/4, most are mid 15s. Most Fiero owners I know, or as it seems the younger guys, are swapping in heavily moddified L67's, Small Block V8s, N*s, you name it it fits as long as its GM. Right now in Minnesota we have one low 9 second Fiero (front engine), two confirmed 11.9 second Fieros, and a slew of 12 second Fieros. Modded Fieros have very similar 60' times to DSMs, even the stock Fieros can get a high 1.9 60'.
