Loud pop??

Today I was driving into work and I had the clutch pedal pressed down and I was coasting at about 10 mph so I put it into second gear and as soon as I engage I hear the most ungodly loud popping sound. So then I move up a couple feet and I hear another pop, but it wasn't as loud. The car seems to be shifting fine and the clutch seems to be engaging/disengaging normally. Don't see any fluids spewing/dripping from anywhere. Could that have been my transfer case/driveshaft poping? Car is a 97 gsx with 109,XXX miles, ACT 2600 clutch and shep rebuilt trans. Any idea on what this could have been? I hope nothing broke

Re: Loud pop??

If it's not effecting your driveline, why exactly do you assume it's driveline related? Are you 100% sure it wasn't a back fire or something ?

Crankwalk? haha jk.

Hmm thats a hard one to diagnose. Check the fluid in both the tranny and transfer case just to be sure. Maybe your throw out bearing is making noise?

Yea could it have been a backfire or does it keep happening?

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a back fire because I know what back fire sounds like. This was just, I can't even describe how loud the pop was it was so damn loud and it happened in the process of engaging the clutch, it wasn't even fully engaged. You would've thought something broke/shattered if you heard the sound. The reason I think it's driveline related is because someone told me once that the fluid in their transfer case was low and it made a loud pop noise. Maybe it was just a really sloppy clutch engage on my part, but it seems fine now. I guess we'll see.. I'm not suprised cause EVERY year the week before the mitsu cookout something shits out on my car, it's like a curse or something.

Yea I'm going to check the fluids tomorrow. There were two pops, one really loud and one pretty faint a few seconds afterwards. I haven't heard the sound since and my car backfires every now and then anyway.
