Muffler Preferences
What are ya'll folk running for mufflers? It is going to be next spring before I install an aftermarket exhaust on my car ('92 Laser RS AWD) however I want to make sure I make a good decision. The exhaust will be custom 3" stainless but as for which muffler to use is where I'm lost. I have read some good things about Megan Racing's stainless mufflers: http://www.meganracing.com/products/...e.asp?catid=45
I have always liked the sound of the Buschur exhaust setups and from what I understand they use a Dynomax muffler. Barton's Apex exhaust also had a great tone. I am also planning on getting ahold of Flowmaster to see if they have anything potentially available since I've worked with their Advanced Technology Group before. I am also planning on running a high-flow catalytic converter but that may change. In the end, noise level is not of concern as generally, the louder the better.
Like usual though, I am definitely open to recommendations, suggestions, comments, etc.
Thanks!

Re: Muffler Preferences
I loved my Hooker Maximum Flow. It had a nice deep tone without much droning and no raspy ricer stuff.

Re: Muffler Preferences
I had a Thermal R&D muffler on my GST and I thought it sounded awesome. My friend has a Magnaflow on his EVO, and it sounds great too, sounded damn near identical to my Thermal one.

Re: Muffler Preferences
I have the buschur setup with an ultraflow muffler. If your looking for a nice deep aggresive sound that is not that quiet then go with a Dynomax. Straight through tubing and I like the sound of it around town. Trips are another thing though, so if you want something quieter I think I would go with maybe the hooker max flow and a resonator where the cat would be.
I think that is what my next setup will be, as ultraflo's are just too noisy for me, and I have a 2.5" only. CVD's 3" AHP (hooker max flow) with no cat vs. mine with high flow cat... mine was louder.

Re: Muffler Preferences
I will also mention that I will be running an external wastegate along with an externally dumped O2 housing with the manufacturers/specs TBD.

Re: Muffler Preferences
I would have whoever is doing your exhaust to take the dump tube and reroute it back into your DP. Sound gets hella annoying and you can't get on it with cops around.

Re: Muffler Preferences
Another muffler thread? Anyway, thermal is one of the quietest, but they are pretty expensive. They have a nice, deep tone to them.

I loved the way my Thermal R&D exhaust sounded.

Re: Muffler Preferences
Ceramic muffling cartridge? I've never heard of that before. Looks like it allows for better flow then traditional straight thru designs

Re: Muffler Preferences
I've always been a fan of borla mufflers, they always sound nice and perform well. Burns stainless also carries some wicked looking mufflers.

I guess I was not aware that there is/was already a muffler discussion here.
Thanks to all that have responded!

Re: Muffler Preferences
As you can see Thermal is a very good, but expensive choice. If you decide to use Thermal, get their whole cat-back not just a muffler; they design all their stuff very well to extract as much power as possible. Apexi does aswell with their N1 systems.

Re: Muffler Preferences
don't thermal catbacks narrow down from 3" to like 2.5 or sumthin so they can mate up with stock cats? That's one thing I didn't like about em if I'm remebering correctly. But I just had the Thermal muffler put on another companies piping, and it sounded really good.

Thats pretty lame if they do, I know Apexi just uses an adaptor that gets tossed in the trash aslong as you have a downpipe (Apexi's or RRE's).

My 1G FWD system narrowed down to about 2" to fit the stock cat but I just cut it off and ran a 2.5" piping. When I ordered mine through HRC they offered to set it up for 3" slip fit at no extra charge.
