Just a fun little thought. People still talking about DSMs and the sleeper look. Want my view? No? Well tough shit I'm gonna toss this honk of thought rigth at you. I say DSMs are gone and done. They are still a very potent toy, but as they get older, they get cheaper and as Shane has said before they get to the cost point that everyone has them now. Good for business, Good for parts, bad to sleeper shit. With the Shootout being around 10 years now, DSMs being known for running 9s and 10s in what can be considerd to us as streetable, and the internet forums I don't think there is any way to classify them as being sleepers.

Considering almost every one you find for sale now is modded or was "returned" to stock. At the track this past weekend a muscle car guy comes up to Nash in his dirty as 1G Talon that don't look nothing like a low 11 second car. But he new right away it was quick and said himself he'd have one if he could fit in it. That was funny but when you break it down even the good ole boys are starting to catch on.

But I will let you be the judge..... I honestly don't think any sport compact car anymore in this market can truley be called a sleeper. To much push for performance in the marketing alone. I think a sleeper is now truely somthing you have to get creative with....

Nashs car and CVD car are sleepers to me... they dont look taht fast but they are...

The ones that arent all prepped on looks are ussually the fastest...

that is why im slow... I should just let it rust out.

I dont know.. The lasers look really sleeperish if you were to kjeep them stock looking.. but otherwise Im pretty sure most "Racers"know whats up.. especially if you are comparing a dsm with a honduh or the like...

I say that it depends where you are located. Sure in the more largely populated areas like the Twin Cities, Des Moines, etc.... as a whole everybody and his/her brother is going to be fairly informed about the sport compact era that has come before the automotive world. When you get into the smaller areas like my hometown Decorah up in NE Iowa, the presence of a truly sleeper sport compact, specifically a DSM, is relatively unbenounced. Granted there are those sleepers here and there but they are in no way making their presence known in the smaller towns like they are in the larger areas. Sure the populations are different bla bla bla, but on a smaller scale the sport compacts are still evolving in the more rural areas. It doesn't help that movies like FnF2 come out and protray the sport compact world as total rice with fart can mufflers, eight foot tall wings, and type-r racing stickers leaving the more rural areas basically unexposed to the true sleepers that are out there since after these years of "sport compact evolvement," they are still relatively unknown.

There are tons and tons of people out there who are into cars, sorta, but just arent on the internet at all, and are barely into the street/strip scene.
Hughes and I just schooled a mustang the other night. The guy was a total assclown. He was totally blown away by the fact that i blew him away :P


In all, I think DSMs are total sleepers on the street, but not nearly as "potent" when it comes to the race spots.

Depends on how fast you're talking about. Everybody knows they run 12's and 13's, people shit when you start talking 11's or better while looking pretty stock. If you had a 10 second 2G with a stupid fucking body kit on it, you'd really have a sleeper.

To me the "sleeper" aspect has to do with putting on the right parts that you don't see. Also comes from the power potential of the DSM. The only give aways for my car are the GReddy 24R in the grille, gauge pods on the a-pillar and the Apexi-N1 hanging out the rear. And even then some might still think I'm a slowboy. :P How many car companies build something that you could take in stock form, do a few little mods to and almost double the rated power? And then do plenty and triple the rated power, plus? Think about it, the Honduh boys like to talk about how fast their cars are, but throw a DSM into the conversation and they get real quiet. They throw around the b16b, b16c, b18, v-tec, and so on, with what ever the letters are for those engines, but throw out the 4g63t and those in the know will tell you we have the engine to have.

There are some really fast DSM's out there running 7, 8 & 9 sec 1/4 miles, but they are rare compared to the number of 13, 14, & 15 sec DSM's on the streets. Just as there are some extremely fast Honduhs out there in the right hands, but on the streets it's a different story.
There are plenty of bodykit and scissor door 420A Eclipses out there to keep them thinking we are all hype. :dsmrule:

I think that 1gs are the only sleepers in dsm line just because the 2gs look faster, which is not always the case.

I think that they are sleepers to some people. Even a stock 15 sec dsm can beat most hondas. For honda performance, you pretty much have to do an engine swap or rebuild and add on NOSSS or a turbo kit to make any decent power. I went to rf once to spectate this year and saw several sport compact cars with a turbo or nitrous running high 15's. Most hondas are all dreaming about a GSR engine swap or some other vtec engine that they dont worry about non honda compeditors. I saw a turbo civic take down a SRT4 this weekend though. BTW, I am talking about hondas because that is mostly what I see race.

It really depends. Mainly how much people know about cars and such. I think 1G's are especally when they are the ones that don't look good at all the the faided/peeling paint but are really fast. If a 1G is in great shape and looks like it was just repainted then more than likely it is owned by a car guy and modded.

It all depends on the way the car looks and who is looking at it. People that know alot about cars know to give dsm's respect.

If I ever get a dsm, I might rather have one that looks like crap so I wouldn't have to worry about ruining a nice car.

this is with a stock looking 97 gsx

I think it was like a 12.2 to a 12.7 and the eclipse is a DD.

I think DSMs are still sleepers to the general population. Especially the 1g Lasers. I mean a 90 RST has no ground effects or a spoiler. Most people think its just a 140hp non-turbo. Even I have to look closly to tell the difference.

I was talking to an older guy at a birthday party a few weeks ago. He was a muscle car guy. When I told him a 1g DSM could hit 12s with the stock turbo, he didn't believe me at first. I had to get into great details of how its done, before he'd believe me.

DSMs have a small nich crowd. Once you stray too far away from that crowd, people have no idea.
