My Yatta Project
Figured I'd start a project up here since I'm now getting to the point where some advice from those here would be a big help, I've been away from Boost for some time, so I'm sure things have changed.
The Yatta: And 02 that just hit 30k miles this past year.
Will add some pics later tonight.
Wheel/Tire combo currently: TRMotorsports C1M's wrapped in 205/50R-15 Kumho Ecsta SPT
Suspension combo currently: Tokico Illumina Shocks, FM Springs, and FCM Bump Stops.
To come this year is going to where I start asking for some help as I really need to do some homework on suspension and then the Turbo vs SC debate on the 1.8 monster I'm rocking here. Other than that I'm stock power wise.
As for plans for the car. Heavy AutoX with 1 or 2 track days for 2012. I'm currently in STR for AutoX, but will be moving likly to SSM with upgrades.

Re: My Yatta Project
what is yatta?
No psi, you will get scared.
16G sounds like it would do good for your usage.
Can I pilot it again this year?

Re: My Yatta Project
Have specific questions? And I can't believe you even have a turbo vs. SC debate..
Like Aaron said, something like a evo iii 16g or similar may be a great option for your goals.

Re: My Yatta Project
The problem with this platform and turbos is torque. The 5spds seem to die pretty quick with auto-X use if they are handling any tq (~250lb/ft)
If i remember right, the 6spds tend to be quite a bit more robust. I can't remember if the mazdaspeed box is even stronger yet.
There are some decent supercharger setups these days that can make 300+whp but no where near the tq, and thus the trans is happy.
It's been awhile since i read about miatas so maybe some of these things have changed.

Re: My Yatta Project
Turbo, duh. So easy to turbo those cars with a 14b or like was said, a 16g.

The SC is appealing due to the instant TQ on tap. When I'm coming out of a corner, I don't want to wait for power, and while the spool time on a small turbo like the 14b or even t25 is minimal, it's not the same. The other upside, and main one really holding me up is the pure bolt on aspect to the SC's on the market today. They'll get me to 160-180hp all day long (at 102 to the wheels now), without the need for an additional IC.
I'm lost in the world of fuel though, that and suspension has never been my strong suit by any means, and face it, for those here who do know me, I never went much past the bolt on phase with any of my DSMs.

Yeah, and I have a 5 spd non LSD I need to be worried about. I don't ever think I'll reach 300+ hp on this car, if I get into that range (or the impact that range would have on a Miata) I think I'd move to a new platform, Vette most likely.

Easy, maybe... but I want it done right, safely tuned, and with the proper parts. So I need to look at what I want to do myself (very little actual work really, enjoy driving more), and where I'll bring it for the fun stuff.

Re: My Yatta Project
Positive displacement supercharger you're talking about? Or centrifugal style? By the instant torque comment I would assume PD but maybe not. As cool as turbos are, I really did like having the supercharger with e85.

Re: My Yatta Project
Have you thought about going to a LSD rear end sooner rather than later?
I'd go supercharger and E85, depending on what you find on SC usage and racing I know that A2W could be an option for you.
I think def. go E85 for the power and cooling though. Good luck.

that's what I'm leaning to, and since I've never ran e85 before, I'm sure I'd be giving you a buzz when it came time for tuning

I've looked at an LSD and they are quite spending when getting new from Mazda, as well as aftermarket. I don't know if it's a need quite yet as I'm not exactly going to nationals or anything, nor worried about being uber competitive. I'd spend that money on end links, and additional bracing first. And MOAR tire.
The upside to a turbo is that Flyin' Miata already has some solid kits with a lot of support and history behind them. Buy, Install, Tune, 200hp, done. No additional engine or head work needed, just clutch and a steady supply of tires.
Also on my list is new coilovers. I'm on 7.5 inch wide right now, and want to go either 9" or 10", and my suspension won't support that wide of a setup.

Re: My Yatta Project
Decided to skip Turbo or SC all together and further upgrade the suspension.
Going with a new set of coilovers, new front sway bar, end links, and new toyo R1Rs for the current wheels. Then move to a set of 15x9s (current is 15x7) with some RS3s as the main tires.
From there I'll have probably start with a basic exhaust and and intake. All the above would then work quite well when I do move to forced induction, which will probably be a SC on e85.

Re: My Yatta Project
I really would save for a good LSD for it. Buddy of mine put one in his 318ti bmw and it was night and day. No random-ness one-wheel wonder.

Re: My Yatta Project
This is what the car looks like today
I stayed with the plan above and the current mods are just an intense upgrade in the suspension. Full XIDA Club Sport coilovers (750/400 spring rates) with the dual spring system. The TRMotorsports C1M's (15x7) are now wrapped in 195/50/15 Toyo R1Rs while the 205/50R-15 Kumho Ecsta SPTs sit in the garage for daily duty when the summer months are over.
I also have a set of 949 Racing 6ULs in black (15x9) waiting for some 225/45/15 Hankook RS3s to arrive. The 4th set of tires awaiting duty this year is a set of Hoosier A6 225/45/15s. Just waiting to find wheels for those. Other than that, I have an upgraded front sway bar fully installed, adjustable end links on the way, and the car is currently fully aligned and corner balanced. Had it out at MOWOG 1 yesterday and it's night and day, car handles amazing and will only get better as I ad more tire, LSD, and more power. If I can find a good deal on an exhaust and intake here soon I'll probably add that next, and price options for an LSD in the next 2 months.
I hope to hit a total of 10-12 auto x events this year, and an event at BIR and RA as well.
