Brad's Beater 1g

Just picked myself up a 91 Talon TSI awd that has been passed around the forum a bit over the past month. Plan is to daily drive it through winter and next summer then make maybe make it a bit faster when I have my own garage to work on it in.

I wont mess with it power wise for now, just hopefully clean it up a bit.

Mod list stolen from the orginal fs ad:
Engine
FP2 cams
90 Oil filter housing/ with aftermarket oil cooler(AN fittings)
Buschur Racing alternator relocation kit (where A/C compressor use to sit)
A/C delete

Transmission
Comp Clutch stage 4 clutch with 6 puck disk
Sheptrans stage 1 transmission

Turbo
FP 20G
FP 4” intake
2G MAS
EVO III Exhaust manifold
122 performance O2 (Tial 38mm WG)
2.5” Down pipe into 3” catback (no cat) straight through mangaflow muffler

Intercooler
Spearco 2-210 FMIC (old IRC 2-210 kit)

Electronics
DSMLink v3
Autometer phantom (boost/oil pressure/water temp)
PLX wideband
Pocketlogger
Apexi turbo timer
Jumptronix A/F

Fuel (car runs E85)
FIC 1050cc injectors
Buschur racing fuel pressure regulator/SX
Walbro 255lph fuel pump

Suspension
KYB/AGX

Brakes
92-94 dual piston calipers(brembo rotors/HAWK pads Porterfield Carbon/Kevlar Brake Pads R4-S pads)

Ignition
NGK BPR7es spark plugs
NGK spark plug wires

Audio
Infinity Kappa 6.5/6X9
Sony head unit

Misc
Joe P MBC
RRE Breather
Strut tower braces (front and rear)
Battery relocated to trunk (150A stinger fuse)
SS brake lines (all four corners)
Coolant over flow moved to the firewall (bottle replaced but sensor is still operational)
Racing bumpers (front and rear)

Tires/Wheels
2g chromies
Rear wiper and all associated hard ware deleted

First day I picked it up:

Swapped the rims out to the 2g gst wheels I had laying around for the rest of the summer. When winter hits I'll throw some stock evo8 rims with winter tires on it. How it sits as of this morning in my parking ramp.

First is to find/fix any leaks. I think the throw out bearing might be taking a shit too so I'll probably pull the tranny before too long and try swapping that out.

Did Bryan and Shane ever get to finish the tune? Didn't the head gasket pop on the dyno before or something?

Re: Brad's Beater 1g

the head gasket ended up being fine when we took the head off for a new gasket and arps.
the t.o. bearing was new when we put the clutch in but by no means it did not go bad already.

Not really sure, I figured I'd ask Shane about on Sunday if I see him at the cookout. Cruising around the air/fuels are perfect and I haven't really gotten on it. First time I got on it the boost gauge went to 30 pretty quick and let off. Got on it yesterday and saw the check engine light flash quick and got out of it. I'd like to log it but still need to get the cable from Mike at some point.

What headgasket did you guys put in it? Thats the one thing I don't really know about this car. Also just regular ARP's?

Maybe I should have you listen to it then as I THINK it might be the throw out bearing. Sometimes at idle it sounds like a chatter of a twin disc then with the clutch depressed the sound goes away. Sound isn't always there though, thats what leads me to think its the tob. Drives fine, just makes me super nervous as the tob took a shit on my 2g and destroyed my twin disc. Plus transmissions are easy enough to pull on a 1g.

Who did the work on this car previous to Mike having it?? Sucks to fix it right when you get it when it was supposed to be fixed before Mike bought it.

Re: Brad's Beater 1g

I know I sold Bryan my ACT streetlite flywheel when he had it apart also, not sure if that is in the car or if it was in the spare parts pile that came with it when Mike bought it.

Were they the same ARPs that were in it while it was pushing coolant? Were you guys ever able to figure out why it was pushing coolant?

No worries, I figured this weekend with the cookout you two will both be around. Didn't mean to make it seem like a big deal

I think Mark and the the previous owner fixed it. Its a car and I bought it hearing the noise so I knew it was there. It's not a huge deal, 1g's are easy enough to pull the trans on. If the noise is still there next week I'll just pull the trans to feel better about it. Again I bought it know it, shit happens it. Its a car.

He got a new job and needed a more gas friendly vehicle. Haha I don't know, I was glad to pick it up. Also when does Mike ever keep a car very long?

Yep, I got the flywheel with the car too!

If I can sell my bike I might pick up a regular daily and either make this into a beast or keep my eye out for a 2g auto shell.

Ohhh, well perfect. Here is to hoping it doesn't push coolant any more!

Maybe It isn't the tob, who knows.

Again thanks for the info! I really appreciate it!

Yeah this car was an impulse buy after I sold the evo. Let me know if you need help with pulling the trans.

Fer sure, Mike is good shit! I was actually pumped when I got his call asking if I was still looking for a dsm. I wanted to scoop this thing up quick before anybody else had the chance to grab it.

Plan for now is just to drive it and enjoy it. I do miss the power my 2g had but I think I'll have just as much fun driving a mid 300awhp car around not having to worry about stupid little things. Want to make it a beast some day but not until I get my own garage to work on it in and can do it at a nice slow pace.

I'll give you a call if I end up doing it. Thanks again for the car! Hope you get a nice new car!

Yea I like the combo on it to and figured nothing is needed to it to be a great car. Hopefully I can shine it up a bit before Sunday

If the CEL came on you are probably knocking considering you are running 30psi, sh1t. I don't think anyone ever answered my question, what did you pay for this beast?
