Re: How much psi can stock internals hold?

It all depends.

How much power are you trying to make and what kind of gas are you planning on running?

Re: How much psi can stock internals hold?

Andy Nash put 40psi through his stock bottom end at Elite back in the day for a couple pulls, but it saw 30psi on a regular basis I'm pretty sure. His 1g ended up with a rod through the block.

Re: How much psi can stock internals hold?

Boost is not relevant, it is your power output that you need to be concerned about. Regardless, you will be fine on the stock bottom end with a safe tune.

X2.
Pump gas doesn't usually equal very high boost on a dsm motor. I'd be more focused on what kind of power goals you have than how much boost you want to run.

Last summer on e85 I ran around 32-34psi daily through my stock 6 bolt and had boost spikes of 38 at the end of the year on the dyno. Also probably have around 30 pulls at 30ish psi plus a 75, but that was with an amazing tune from Shane @ DB.

Either way I would take it over to Shane @ DB so you can get the most out of it as safely as you can.

Re: How much psi can stock internals hold?

It could blow up at 5psi or 50psi. The boost isn't what matters the most. It will come down to power, tuning (timing and a/fs), and mechanical state of the motor. On pump gas though, you might not be able to run a crazy amount of boost. A DSM at 20psi on pump gas will usually also make way more at 20psi on E85 or race gas, just because of how conservative you need to go on the tune with pump gas.

Stock cams and stock intake manifold?

Maybe 280-350whp FWD on a Dynojet. Just make sure they have all the hardware/software to properly datalog your car for knock.

Re: How much psi can stock internals hold?

also 1 more question..what does a safe tune actually do? how does it differ from a regular dyno tune? will i be making less whp on a safe tune than i would on a regular dyno tune?

Re: How much psi can stock internals hold?

Safe means your shit isn't going to blow up. The tune is either safe or it's not. Good shops tune safe unless you tell them otherwise, but you're foolish to do so. A poor shop will think they're tuning good and safe, but in fact their tune is junk and your car is either in jeopardy of blowing up or it isn't making as much power as it should, or both.

You don't understand. A tune is a tune. Whether it's safe or not is up to the tuner. That's where your trust is involved. Do you trust the tuner enough to make it so it won't blow up on the dyno or when you're beating on it on the street?

Re: How much psi can stock internals hold?

I think what you need to understand, is that boost pressure is not the same thing as cylinder pressure. All boost pressure is, is the air pressure in your intake.

Re: How much psi can stock internals hold?

The compression of your motor also matters. The lower the compression, the easier it will be to get a good (higher boost) tune on pump gas. Depending on the compression/condition of your motor, I am guessing you could run 18-25psi pump. Having 40k on the motor does not mean it will be in good shape either.
