Looking at a Evo - need suggestions
I'm going to be looking at a 9 and are there any specific things about these cars I should look for? I.e. evidences that it's been abused, modded and returned back to stock, etc.

Re: Looking at a Evo - need suggestions
if they did any beating on it what so ever, the stock clutch will be gone, so they'll either have a new replacement or an aftermarket one.
if theres someway to pull the rom from it to see if it has been flashed with tephra patches, or a tune.
otherwise alot of them get kept stock for warranty reasons. good luck with the search!

Or else post up lots of pictures of the car on this site or evolutionm.com and see if anyone owned the car.

What colors are you looking for, what is your time frame? How much do you want to spend? Do you want an MR or IX. What will you be using it for? There are a couple for sale on Evomn.net

Google and EvoM searches along with national local forum search. That's how I buy modded out-of-state cars. But maybe that's why I'm on like 100 forums

make sure it doesnt sound like this.

quote from EVOM.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A USED EVO:
I just recently went through this so the experience is fresh in my mind. The first thing you should do is figure out which year you would like. The '03 is definately the cheapest so if money is an issue, you can start there. Next, if possible find the car with the accessories you would like with the lowest mileage possible. Obviously thats a given. Once you find a car to look at, look real closely at everything. Remember you would like to find one as stock as possible. Look at the radiator fins. Are they slightly bent; does it looks like someone has been playing around in there, maybe changing turbos and putting the stock one back on? Is the stock intake solid, or does it feel loose like it has been put on and off a few times? Check the oil, does it look fresh or is it low and black looking. How do the tires look? New tires especially for this car can be expensive and they are one of the key elements to how this car performs. How does the transmission shift? Naturally the tranny is a bit notchy but you can till what its supposed to feel like. How does the outside of the car look? If it has been neglected, most likely the rest of the car has been too. When driving the car, slam on the brakes. Does the wheel pulsate like the rotors are warped, or is it a smooth stop? And finally, one of the best things you can do. Take down the vin number and call Mitsubishi. Ask them what kind of warranty repairs have been made. One of the cars I looked at had about 6 different $800 to $3000 repairs all on different items on the car. That right there tells you one thing. The car has been driven hard and you dont want it. Also get a carfax report. Most dealerships (if thats where the car is) give a free one. If you have to buy one, its worth the money. Be very thorough and remember that you are spending a good amount of money here. Take your time. If something doesn't look right, ask about it. Good luck, and don't rush a purchase, its worth waiting a little while longer for a nice one.

Re: Looking at a Evo - need suggestions
The transmission would be a big concern for me. Expensive and seems to be a common problem. I have had a few Evos on the dyno that would be unraceable because of how bad their trannies were.

Re: Looking at a Evo - need suggestions
Yup yup, check the thing all over for signs of rust or being off-roaded, any crazy build-up underneath would be cause for concern. Check the exhaust for big dents and stuff. See if hte wheels have curb rash, check the FMIC for dents and stuff. Check the body over and make sure it's uber clean, no dents or anything.
Other than the basic stuff, just drive the car. If the clutch engages smoothly, power delivery is smooth, shifts fine, cruises fine, and brakes fine, you're probably in business. After some mild driving, give it some WOT pulls and heavy braking slams. Don't BEAT on the car as it's not yours yet, but just enough to test it and make sure it's gonna perform like you want it to.
Lastly, bring a friend. When hughes got his IX, I went with him. We went on a road trip and we looked the car over super super good, logged it, etc before making the commitment. two sets of eyes is better than one!
