Car won't start. Help Please!!!
I transfered my engine/tranny into a different shell. And after i have assembled everything, i can't get my car to start. The car tries to run as long as i have the key turned, but as soon as i let off it sputters and backfires to a hault. I checked and rechecked the plug and wires, and there good. I know it's getting fuel, cause one of the injector gromits was bad and it spewed fuel all over, so i replaced all four. I wired in an SAFC and thought that I mixed up some of the wires, but checked all the wires and there good. The AFC even kept its settings ffrom before, Karmons, and 2 Cyl up.
The car is getting fuel, air and spark. I know the engine is good along with the ECU, because they both came out of my car, which ran perfectly. I have gone over everything I can think of and cannot get the car to run. I've been racking my brain for days and am ready to flip the fuck out. If anybody can give me some ideas, even if you think they're obvious, throw em up here, cause maybe I didn't think of it.
My friend called his mechanic friend and he said that Talons have to get there ecu's flashed, or something when you remove the engine or ECU. He said it has to do with the cam angle sensor and a computer that reconfigures it. Haven't ever heard of anything like that, but if you guys know something I don't...

Check your Cam Angle Sensor. It could be off 180 degrees. I had that same problem a couple cars ago, and it turned out the CAS was bad. Even if it worked in your car, doesn't mean it will work now. Something could have happened between then and now.

Timing is probably off or the CAS. Could be a bad ECU but unlikely.

How do you adjust the CAS? But how could it have gotten messed up when I didn't touch it. And as for the ecu, it ran everything in the last car just fine. I do have a feeling it does have to do with the CAS, but how can I tell for sure? I know the timing isn't off, because it was off, and i fixed it yesterday.
Its not like this stuff has been sitting around for a while, I started on this three weeks ago to the day. Before that, everything was in a working car.

Did you swap it in or out of a 1990?

Re: Car won't start. Help Please!!!
With the car i'm looking after taking care of, when you start the car, it will turn over fine, start running, then fall flat on it's face. Sounds like what you have. Try starting the car and pumping the gas pedal. When you look at the car, or try and figure out what's wrong. You'd think, starter's bad, bad plugs, wires need to be replaced. But, if you start the car, and go about 3/4 or 1/2 throttle and tap it that far as fast as you can, my(babysiting) car starts and just idles bad for a while. Try it and see if it's working. Another option, is everything grounded out?

The grounds could be an issue. I'll have to make sure i go over them. Where are the major ones, besides the battery ground?
I have tried giving it gas while turning it over, but makes no difference. It tries to run, but as soon as i let off the key it putters and backfires off. It's ran for maybe all of five seconds at a time. It has the esentials, but won't stay running.

Re: Car won't start. Help Please!!!
So it stays running after the ky is off for a short little bit? I'm not sure i understood when you stated that before. I had a field day trying to get it to start the first time. I'll take your word, but it took me 15 or so tries to finally start it. It smelt of gas, and seemed like there was no spark. After it warmed up, it would have no issues.
Check the grounds, try making some new ones, i'm not sure on the DSM where most are located, but i know almost the entire block is grounded out, along with the body. Someone else may be able to help you out, but with the grounding kits you see, they just ground everything together. Engine, tranny, exauhst and frame.
Anyone know all of the grounds?

I have a strong feeling it has to do with the grounds, but all the ones i've seen so far are fine.
When i start the car, before it shuts off, it backfires like crazy.

Re: Car won't start. Help Please!!!
Sounds familure....
I know you said before, mention anything and everything possible, no mater how simple it may be.
The car i've got does the same thing if you don't gas it right, but if you keep at it i can get it to start, and run. It never gets up and goes the first time. Backfires about 2-3 times then dies. But if you keep on the gas and rev it for about 10-15 seconds and let it go. The idle drops off to about 600 rpm then fixes it's self and runs.
You may have a more severe problem then we had, and Febo and i have rounded it out to 2-3 things. BISS and ISC motor both being bad, along with ECU about to go out on us.
Double check timing, fix the grounds if you can find any, if not make some of your own. And let us know how everything works!!
Also, do you idle surge, or did you iddle surge on the old car? And what all got transfered from one car to the other?
Was it just an engine tranny ONLY swap? If so some of the above items may be totaly shot. also, vacuum lines. They could be cracked, pinched, or otherwise missing.

Re: Car won't start. Help Please!!!
Even if i hold the pedal down all the way, it makes no diference. The car won't get passed 500 or so rpms
Could it be because the gas has gone bad in the car. It was sitting for a while.

Re: Car won't start. Help Please!!!
How long is a while?
And also, it wasn't holding the gas down, you had to tap it for some reason, UP-DOWN-UP-DOWN-UP-DOWN-UP-DOWN-UP-DOWN as FAST as humanly possible. Hence taking 15+ attempts to start it.
I've had gas in a vehicle for 9 months and it fired right up after the lines charged. Never had so much presure in a tank in my life though. Maybe you got some water in it. Try draining it, putting in a couple galons with a little bit of HEAT in there. Nice thing is, not only does it prevent freezing, it also removes water from the gas.

Re: Car won't start. Help Please!!!
He said he filled it up about a month before I bought it, so not as long as i thought. But all the fuel lines were open, so water in the gas is a definite possibility. I'll try your method of pumping it fast. I have an extra CAS that came with the car, so I'm going to install that and see what happens. I'm stumped so far though.

Re: Car won't start. Help Please!!!
Have you done a compression check? Made sure you are getting gas in all 4 cylinders, made sure you are getting spark in all 4 cylinders?
This is simple~
3 things to make a engine run... Compression, Spark and Fuel. If it has all that, then it is timing related.
