Tire Shaving

Just wanted to post up some info on tire shaving for those (like me) who might not be aware of it's use.

There is the obvious use for competition and here is TireRack.com's info on it:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=67

It can also be used to save a little money if you have one tire go to shit. Generally (depending on the drive of the car, RWD, FWD, or AWD) you need/should to replace at least 2 tires at a time and with AWD it's suggested to do all 4.

When I had my winter tires put on they found 1 tire that was an accident wating to happen. So we trashed it and I was left with 3 tires with one solid season left on them. Buying 1 brand new tire wasn't in my plans due to the wear of the other 3 tires. I either needed to replace 1 tire and have it match the tread of my current 3 or replace all 4.

This is where Tire Shaving came in hand for me to save some money. I called up Tire Rack this morning. Told them the tire I needed, the tread depth I needed, and for a $25 fee they'll have a tire ready for me to complete my summer set by the end of the week. Quick and painless and I was able to spend about $600 less than I was set out to spend and not watse the rest of my other 3 tires.

If anyone has any more info on tire shaving and even some other location that can do this please post them up. I contacted Tire Rack @ 888-353-5082 and was off the phone with an order in less than 5 min.

Re: Tire Shaving

Doesnt the tire that turned out to be crap have warranty on it for a certain milage against defects? I know tires plus replaced one of my Continental tires on my GSX because there were a couple cracks in the sidewall. They just take whatever percent the tire is worn and add that cost to the new tire you have to get..

Re: Tire Shaving

The tires didn't have any kind of warrently plan on them from what I was able to find out, and frankly it started to be a hassle to find out who was going to deal with the 1 bad tire. And in the end I wouldn't of gotten much for it since the tread balance left was 5/32 and they are legally bald at 2/32.

basically I had a nail in the tire shortly before I replaced them with snow tires. It was ran flat enough to cause some major sidewall damage before I got it back up to a safe driving inflation and then got them replaced. All in all, i was lucky there was 100% no damage to the wheel.

Re: Tire Shaving

Tires on a new car (or tires in general unless you buy a protection plan) have no warranty coverage for running over hazzards.

Ah I didnt know it was from a nail, I figured it was a flaw in manufacturing or some other defect like that.

When I worked at Tires plus they had a tire siping machine, I do not know if that is the same machine they would use to shave the tire down, you could call and ask.

Re: Tire Shaving

No, siping is a whole other process. With siping it just cuts the tread up with slits to increase traction, shaving uses another mahcine that shave the tread right offf. My tire is already on it's way to my house.

Re: Tire Shaving

I meant paying extra to get your non-siped tires siped. Many all-seasons actually perform worse when siped by the store.

I agree, but it's human nature to half-ass things.

Agreed! Jim at Tirerack is pretty involved with the S2k community and is a great resource since he personally does a lot of the tire testing/reviews.

Re: Tire Shaving

Yeah, Tire Rack rocked in this one, and I'll have Discount Tire in Rogers put the summer tires back on soon I hope. Now comes the question of when.
