Very simply, an 8-point gets the "halo" or D part of the cage over your head and ties to the floor in the footwell area. You're not going to need all of that though, your cage is fine. The tech is blowing sunshine up your ass.

That camera mount is a great view! Nice run. "11.7..." "No shit!?!" haha What a nice surprise.

A 5-point roll bar is fine down to 10.0 with our cars in NHRA. He could kick you out for not having a scattershield at 11.99.
Thats what it says in the sport compact 2005 rulebook in the street tire section (4.4). And the general regulations in the regular 2005 NHRA rulebook. I am just stating what the chassis inspector for this area is telling us. It would really depend upon what the tech official says at the track.
He can get booted for a ton of other violations.

The "D" bars are the bars in the cage that go from the main hoop to a chassis. They are required in faster cars, because in the event of a role over, they are suspose to take 80% of the impact force and keep the main hoop from pushing the frame (or in our case plates) out from under the car. That is why inner and outer frame rails are required in some circumstances.
The Halo is what makes it a roll cage, before that its a roll bar.
From what we have been told, if brians cage is a "5 point" (with passanger side brace bar) it is good to 10.99. If its a full cage, with bars that incase the driver, and has proper D bar braces (which I doubt john did, as we just found out about this), it would be *could* good to 8.50's. Obviously stating that you have the rest of the safety equipment required. (parachute of over 150, scatter shield, sfi approved items, etc etc etc etc).
There is also a class break at 9.99 as far as rules are concerned.

Please show me where it says that in the rule book, as I've meet with the NHRA inspectors and they tell me otherwise.
From the nhra sportcompact rule book

4:11 ROLL CAGE
Mandatory in all cars running quicker than 10.99 seconds or faster
than 135 mph, or per Class Requirements. Cars with unaltered
firewall, floor, and body (from firewall rearward, wheeltubs
permitted) running between 10.00 and 10.99, roll bar permitted in
place of roll cage, or per Class Requirements.

That Tech guy must have missunderstood the rules then. Wouldn't be the first time I'm sure.

But so far I've been buying everything that's SFI or FIA Rated. My seats are legal but what ever I'm not even wearing my harness's anyways. They just get me through Tech. I would wear them if I didn't have to start my Log and then put the laptop down on the passenger floorboard.

My laptop sucks so I try to keep the files as short as possible. Anyrate again thanks for all the great info, even though there are a lot of fast guys down here none of them seem to ever post.

Yea, thats the same as the normal NHRA rules. He is good down 10.0, except for the 135mph rule, which they don't seem to enforce much.

I was wrong, it does say it in the book, I was just going with what the inspector told us. He was off, and I haven't had time to look at a rulebook until now.
Cool. Now our "6 point" mild steel roll bar option is good to 10.0
I'll have to change all the crap :(.
I'll call NHRA monday morning to confirm, but the rulebook does state that a bar is good to 9.99 or 135mph traps.

Confirm what? It says it right in the rules there and on NHRA's web page. 5/6 point cages are good to 10.0, this is like common knowledge in the performance world. For NHRA tracks a 5-point will do, for IHRA tracks you need a 6-point.

So next time I go, am I supposed to wear my suit? And am I missing anything else?

I will probably be running Race gas next time I go. (however I have to take my turbo and manifold off, find 2 bolts for my manifold, take the turbo apart and then install the exhaust side to the manifold, and reassemble. Oh the fun of having the oil feed at the top of the turbo, gets in the way of all sized wrench's. It'll probably be a few weeks till I go back. (sometime in december I'm guessing)
