I'd just feel better buying it out of a drum or even buying my own 5-10 gallon containers.

After doing some reading I'm wary of buying 100+ octane gas from the pump. Or if I do I'd play it safe and expect to get something like 4 points less than it's listed as.

Gasoline is produced rather equal, e85 can vary straight from the plant, and also degrades faster than gasoline.

well its a matter of freshness.. meaning I'm guessing they go through more E85 then they do race gas..

It does, but manufacturing differences add to the variables.

That's why it's recommended to buy race gas in air-tight containers.

one of the issues with a lot of the pump/race gas is consistency.. and water in gas

how much lower octane is e70 than e85?
