more then likely that piston is fubard is the rod bent/broke

piston has to go out the top

you are not re-using the rings right?

getting the rings past that is a little hard, machine shops use a ridge reamer befor removing used pistons

thats probably it, i'll just push hard from the bottom side of the piston

use a pry bar or something to push on the rod, there is a ridge at the top of the bore
