shane just explained it. vtec has multiple lobes so you get different lift profiles, then there is evo mivec which retards/advances the cam

either it shuts down a bank of cylinders, or its a dohc set up, or its a sohc set up, or it has fewer lobes per cam, or it only has multiple lobes on the intake
