Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

The head is warped out of spec, so I'm just going to have him deck it, ream the head bolt holes out to 1/2" for the 6 bolts studs and tap and plug the egr. I'll probably have him check the valve guides too just because.

Ahh, too bad this isn't a few weeks from now! I could do all of that for nearly nothing.

Well, FWIW Cylinder Head express is like blocks from where I live and I'm planning on bringing it to Gosh.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

ha, yea. For the motor stuff I am willing to pay a few extra bucks.

Actually, after talking to Cylinder Head express, I may just bring my head there, he used to do Brent Rau's heads for his 2g. So he does quality work, and I don't have to drive 40 some miles to get it done. Money saved there!

Yup I would just go to cylinder head express. They've done both my heads on my current talon and my old talon and did a great job on both. Sucks for me that they moved so far away lol. They used to be like 5 min from my house

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Got a few parts yesterday, good deals on it all.

Have this now for when I do the swap:

This thing came off MAP's FDSM, and its like new. Got a killer deal on it. This can replace that stupid aluminum underdrive pulley.

Also got a JMF coil pack relocate and a mint upper timing cover.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Got some more parts so I can finish this damn shortblock finally.

I also got the wrong rear main seal and front case gasket with my master rebuild kit, they gave me 7 bolt parts for those 2 items so I got the rear main from RockAuto for $5 and the rest is OEM. I added a OFH and water pump gasket in there just to be on the safe side. I didn't want anything else holding me up.

Should be everything I need!

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Small update here, ended up getting another wrong front case gasket from JNZ, before they sent me another correct one free of charge. So I got the front case on the engine, OFH, pulleys, oil pan, etc. Then I realized I forgot to torque on the oil pump sprocket with the front case off the car, and now with the oil pan on, I have no way to get to it to hold it still. So I'm guessing I'll have to wait until I get the head installed and the timing belt on until I am able to torque it down now.

Anyways, now I have the motor at home and just need to get it onto the stand so I can get to the top end portion of the build.

Plugged the egr from the head yesterday:

Used a 1/4 npt plug:

Now I can bring it in to Cylinder Head Express to get it re-surfaced, hot tanked, have the guides checked, lap the valves and anything else needed to get this thing on the block and in the car.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Well, I brought the head in yesterday and here is what I found out: The head is warped all the way through, it will need to sit in the oven to pull it straight again. He also showed me where someone had done a partial valve job (only 2 of them) where the seats were cut, new valves were put in and then the butts were ground all uneven to make them work.

Basically, someone did some shitty work to this head and it will be more cost efficient to just get a new core rather than try to fix all the fuckups in this one.

So the plan is to find another 2g head, re-do the oil port mod, and egr plug, and drop it off.

Well, I've found a waaay cleaner shell to continue this project in. Once I get the new shell, this thing will be up for sale for cheap/parted.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Well, I blew the head money on a cleaner shell than my rust bucket. Well worth the money! Picked this up from 4g63tcrazy, it was insanely clean when he had it, so hopefully I can return it to it's former glory. It's still real low mileage (79k) and he took real great care of it, so it'll be a perfect car to start with instead of the white pos. Plus he gave me a ton of parts with it, so thats a big bonus! I'll have to make a fs thread soon, I have lots of stuff to sell now.

Looks like I'll need a cf hood to replace this white thing. Anyone want some 2g wheels with good tires on them?

Wanted to test fit my fmic and it popped right on in about 10 seconds.

Still super clean under the hood, lots of dust from sitting for ~2 years, but still great looking. I'll either need a wiring harness, or get the one from the white n/t car to work. Then I'll have to do my own tuck work to make it work with the fuse box relocation
