Cams

I'm sure this has been asked before; I even searched!
This winter I'd really like to get cams. I am pretty set on getting the HKS 272/272 combo. I am wondering if anyone recommends anything different? I know a few other companys make cams for the 4G63, and they are a little bit cheaper than the HKS (I was eyeing the Comp Cams 101200 which are similar to the HKS 272s). Also, will I need to get and upgraded valvetrain parts? Or degree the cams in (I know the HKS just drop in, I am just wondering about the others)?

About the car the cams are going into: '92 Tsi AWD, it won't rev past 7500rpm anytime soon, crappy/lumpy idle doesnt bother me, rebuilt stock 4G63, ARPs, metal HG, rebuilt head, Buschur 20G, all supporting mods. The car is setup for 19-20 psi on 92 oct. And I will hopefully get a new Magnus SMIM this winter too.

Re: Cams

I used to run the WebCams and was pleased enough with them but the HKS cams are better (and alot more expensive).

P.S. I still have a set of WebCams street grinds forsale for cheap

Re: Cams

HKS cams will ussually drop right in. I've heard the Web cams can be off quite a bit.

The HKS 272/272 combo has been proven to make power, just ask Shane (ecoli). And they will do it on stock springs.

Forced Performance has their own line of cams that are supposed to be really well done, but the bigger ones will require springs. If you are running a 2.3/2.4L the FP3 cams are supposed to be really good for the added stroke.

Re: Cams

I loved my 272's in my 2.0. They work great in that combo, they are a bit small for a 2.3/2.4 though. The FP2's would be my second option.

Re: Cams

Of course I have no direct experience with this, but everything I've read about the FP cams has been positive, especially for the price. If you plan on upgrading your valve springs, the FP1X & FP2X may be good options for you to look at.

Re: Cams

The actual power differences between most of these cams is very little. You have to goto something pretty radical for a cam and do some work to the valve guides to notice much of a difference between the usual Web Street Grind, FP1, FP2, Comp100, Comp200, HKS 264, HKS 272, Crower 414, etc.

I have heard similar remarks about the earlier WebCams being off a bit . My WebCams dropped right in and worked fine although I'm sure they would have performed even better if I would have dialed them in with adjustable cam gears.

If your not going to rev past 7500 I would beleive any of the aftermarket cams you listed would be more than enough.

Re: Cams

I didn't notice much a difference between the Web Cams and the HKS 272s on the dyno on Mara's car. I did do a little bit of cam gear tuning with the Web Cams, but it just added a few HP in the midrange and didn't change the peak power.

I'll plan on getting the HKS cams then, only because I know they will be issue free. I'll get something similar if I decide to be a cheap ass. Thanks for your opinions. In the end any of those cams would be better than stock.
