4g63 Powered Dune Buggy

I've been tossing this idea around and I think I have the technology on making it work. As some of you may know I do Autocad for work and have access to a waterjet cutter (uses high pressure water and powdered rock to cut through up to 3" cast iron, with decent precision) as well as a standard plasma table, good for up to 4-6 Gauge SS.

I drew up a 'Plate' that would convert a 4-bolt VW Bellhousing to a 4g63 block. I'd most likely use the DSM flywheel/PP but try to find a 6-puck clutch, to match up with the splines on the Bug tranny, which brings me to a problem.

The splined portion in the bell housing wouldn't reach (safely) into the DSM portion of the combination. Which made me think of making an 'intermediate coupling', but that's just another thing to break/possible balance issues.

After talking about the swap, a VW guy referred me to 'Kennedy Engineering'. http://www.kennedyenginc.com/Pages/E...nList4cyl.aspx ... Scroll Down to #5900 (under mitsubishi)

They offer a CNC machined plate that will 'In-set' the DSM flywheel/assembly to allow for a 'bolt-in' modification. I'm assuming you bolt the plate to your engine, then bolt the engine/plate to your tranny.

I would assume not alot of people would use a 4g63 in a VW bug, but a dune buggy is wide open, plenty of room to work, wicked turbo setup, etc.

Plus these VW engines are pretty lazy and I wanna be able to keep up with freeway traffic without pushing my foot through the floor.

So, onto some pictures.. This is how it sits as of today.

So, really my next plan is to commit to a 4g63, but the $540 install kit, try to find a running 1g/2g, take the ECU and engine/mounts out. Any Ideas or suggestions?

Nice! I've always wanted to see one of these, there is a pretty badass video on YouTube of one of these.

Looks like a sweet project! Will the VW tranny take the TQ from the 4g63?

Re: 4g63 Powered Dune Buggy

haha, I ordered up some different headlights. And white bear glass is getting me a windshield cut up. So, I looked at a late 90's jeep wrangler at the junkyard, it looks like the bumper is solid to the frame. Idk, how else to do a bumper without making it look dumb.
