Coolant temp sensor.

CRAIG

Reason:

If your coolant temp sensor is faulty your cars ECU will thing the air is something like 600degrees F, so the fuel map for starting will be all messed up. Not sure why it would act like that when its still warm out. Usually it only happens when it gets down below 20 or 30 degrees. But I would check there first, then check your MAF for problems also.

Oh yeah, does it throw a CEL at all? A good sign of a sensor is when the car will run like crap and be acting up and then it will throw CEL then start running half way decent. Thats the car bypassing the sensor.

Check vfaq.com. I believe there is a way to check the sensors for resistance. Or you can look at this as a time to upgrade to a 1g TB.

Is your MAS hacked? Also, do a boost leak test. Is the BOV vented to atmosphere? All of those will let in unmetered air at idle, so get those fixed.

The coolant sensor throws an immediate CE light.

Actually it won't through the code until the ECU sees that there is a problem, it is not right away however, it is usually about 20-30 seconds after start up (if you can keep it running by feathering the throttle). Once it throws the code it will idle fine, that is because the ECU is bypassing the sensor and putting the car into a limp mode fuel map. Atleast this is what I have experienced in the past personally. Some cars might be different though.

same thing happened to my buddy except it had something to do with his throttle body. They did something to it, bored it i think and the idle wasnt adjusted properly and when they adjusted it it ran fine. Same thing tho.. started crappy then would run fine later. just an idea...

relating to coolant,

my coolant light on my dash comes on. well it stays on. no cel either. coolant is full. overflow tank is full. no high temps either

i'm thinking it might be that sensor on in that overflow tank.

any suggestions?

later.

Coolant light is just the overflow, check to see if it is plugged in. I had a temp sensor go bad this last weekend and my temp read high all the time (in the red) and now it is past buried as soon as the car turns on. I had a problem that I thought was bad gas, just flushed the tank, changed the filter and plugs, and have the same problem. Temp sensor is next. Unfourtunately my new one is in a box an hour from me.

P.S. My car starts and idles fine. A little high after it has been going for a little bit, but still fine.
