change of color...

I have a buddy (project2g) that goes to school for auto body repair. We are going to be prepping and painting my car pretty soon. I would really like to go from Red to black.
What are some of the better colors of black and brands of paint to use? I will be going a high gloss black. One color i really did like is on my buddies BMW, its called Jet Black. It looked reallly nice.

Re: change of color...

the dupont chroma base paints are nice, a little spendy for some colors though. BASF makes good paints but i'm not sure who sells it. Then there is PPG which is decent and NASON is a cheaper paint but usable... I personally like chroma but have never used BASF. I have heard great things on it though

Re: change of color...

Sherwin Williams and House of Kolors are some of the best. Dupont and PPG are pretty good too. I would paint it a normal black and throw some HOK effects into the clear coat. Throw some big pearls or some metal flake in it.

Re: change of color...

^^ And have it look like a bass boat and have the texture of sandpaper?? Ick.

PPG makes a couple different levels of quality. OMNI is the low end, DBC is their middle of the road color/clear, and their Global refinish system is top shelf stuff. The shop I work at sprays Speis/Hecker color and clearcoat and it's very high quality, but also very high priced. Valspar makes a decent quality paint that is also pretty cheap, but I'm not sure if they have a basecoat/clearcoat line.

As far as better/worse colors in black, there really aren't any that are "better" than another. The only difference would be the pearl/metallic flake in the basecoat. I would suggest that you just look through some color match books and use whatever the school shop has on the mixing bank. Chances are, it's decent quality.
EDIT: Damnit Boostcreep. you got in the way

I said big pearls, not big metal flake. You need a fine metal flake if you go that route. Also, it won't have a rough finish if you do the prep right. Your final layers of clear should not have effects in them.

You want all the additives and effects to be in the basecoat. Or if you want to be fancy, you could lay down a basecoat, then a transparent mid coat ontop of that, and depending how many coats you put on, will determine how much that color stands out. You don't want to put any pearl/metal flake in the clearcoat at all, whatsoever, no matter how many coats you put on top of it.

Straight from the House of Kolor website:

"KAMELEON® PEARLS (KPF)
The color changing effect of Kameleon® Pearls are just as dramatic as the Kameleon™ Base coats Available in four color changing pigments, they are in dry form and may be added to SG-100 Intercoat Clear or any of our acrylic lacquer or urethane clears. The pearls can make a vehicle appear to be different colors to people looking at it from different angles. Use these pearls to add an exciting flare to your artwork.

KAMELEON® OPALS (KOP SERIES)
Kameleon Opals represent some of the latest advancements in pearlescent technology allowing radical color shift from different viewing angles when sprayed over black and darker colors. These colors can also provide an opalescent effect when sprayed over white and lighter colors. These products are available as easy dispersing powders that can be added to clears, pearl base coats, and Marblizer® to create dazzling effects and exciting new colors."

So, can they still not be added to clears even though HOK says that you can? I also had a white race car with a blue pearl clearcoat over the original paint. It was not rough at all and looked cool in the sunlight. This is very popular down in Florida, they pearl cars all the time to make them stand out.

Re: change of color...

House Of Kolor must be the only paint manufacturer that is doing that then. Any paint that I've ever sprayed recommends not using any additives in the clearcoat.

Re: change of color...

If i did end up doing an Eggshell paint, would i put a clearcoat on? This is the other idea im having. But i was wondering if they actually have low sheen clearcoats?

Re: change of color...

Depending on the type of paint you use, you can probably get a flattening additive to put in the clear. I know that Speis/Hecker makes a clear that is a matte finish with no additives needed. If you just put basecoat down with nothing over it, it will scratch very easily and have no UV protection.

Are you doing the engine bay and door jams?

That would be one ugly dsm if it was gloss black and had a red engine bay with red door jams...
