Re: Need a auto tranny for a 92

You might want to check into seeing if the tranny computer is ok. This is a common problem with them. It will go into limp mode and only give you one forward gear. Mainly either 2nd or 3rd. The main symptom is revving alot to get going and then not shifting at all.

Or if it's slipping when going into overdrive it could be the clutch packs for the overdrive.

Either way, it might not be a whole tranny that you need. The computer can be sent to Kearney Auto (I think that's the name) in Austin, MN and they'll rebuild it for you for about $175 or so. This is a separate computer from the engine computer.

Might be a few things to look into before swapping out a whole nother tranny.

Is the tranny full of oil, this can cause problems also. I would try to figure out the exact problem and go from there. Throwing money and parts at a car until it works is not the best route to take.

Re: Need a auto tranny for a 92

I know for a fact that its no form of limp mode, or anything to do with the tranny computer because i have a stand alone shiftbox the bypasses the tranny computer completley.

what it is doing right now is that when it comes to a stop it lurches and jumps then dead stop, getting going takes forever in first, and at times when powering through the gears it will slip. my plans are to get a tranny and TC i know will work then i will rebuilt the one thats broken with an ipt rebuild

Re: Need a auto tranny for a 92

Taking forever to get going in first gear sounds like it's either a stuck valve in the valve body, or it isn't starting in first (usually second or third).

It's up to you what you want to do, but like John siad, I would try to find the problem first before just throwing parts at it.

again, i have a shift box that fully controls the gear the tranny is in. there is something totally messed up with the tranny wether it be a valve, clutch pack, torque converter, or whatever i have no clue what it is individually and have made many threads and posts about this issue, even talked to the IPT guys and no answers

If it hasn't been replaced in the life of the car it wouldn't hurt to install a newer transmission anyway especially with the amount of power you are putting down. Is the tranny fluid dark?

If all else fails you know I still have one that needs a rebuild(first gear clutchpack). You can put that one together with performance parts and be done with it.

Ill keep that in mind, even though that defets my time goals. Whats the deal a couple months ago i had many trannies to choose from, I waited and now they are few and far between

Time goals... Pssh, like you drive the car a lot anyways. Just order the rebuild kit, yank your tranny out, rebuild it and put it back in. 15k since the end clutches? You have not driven the car 15k miles in a year! By the time you replace the tranny and have the car up and driving again, you could have rebuild the one you have in the car right now!

You dont even drive the car in the winter so whats the point?

Haha. He drives it in the winter.

What's the rush, though?
It took me about a day to pull the tranny, rebuild it, and reinstall it.

Re: Need a auto tranny for a 92

end clutches were installed over a year ago, more like 2, and i do drive in the winter you know that, it just happens i take it apart alot with snow on the ground. If i cant find a decent tranny I might be forced to just rebuild the one, but if the issue is with th torque converter i wont have that fixed unless i send it to get restalled......ah shit this might turn into a full tranny build

I have a good TC. Come pick it up. Give me an offer and you can try it out. Hopefully it solves the problem.

The parts are fairly cheap on car-part.com
