Bad Misfire at WOT

Hey guys and trannys,

I've got my 92 AWD, e85, Linked, Hx40d 30psi, blah blah

At WOT the car misfires BAD

No knock CEL (link activated)

Wideband A/F is fine (well, when it isn't missing)

Boost leak test OK

Visually checked plugs, fine (didnt check gap lol)

Wires are newer.

Did not have issue last year, problem started this year and has been getting progressively worse. I have a link log and I haven't even looked at it yet.

Car drives fine and normal all other throttle areas but WOT/High Load.

Any suggestions?

If you need more info rhan above, I'll add as needed.

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

Whenever I have had this problem it has been some part of the ignition. plugs, wires, coil.

Maybe try a different coil pack?

Also, maybe make sure your plugs are gapped properly...haha

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

My Problem Was A Knock Sensor Going Bad & Ignition Timing Being Of. I guess its suppose to be 5 Degrees instead of 10 degrees like just about every other car. My car would get like 27 counts of knock above 5 grand WOT now it knocks close to about 6500- 7k im running pump gas though so im not positive if this will help. just something to check.

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

Throw a set of new plugs in it and gap them correctly. I'd bet your problem is ignition related.

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

I had similar issues, tried new plugs at very low gap, went away for a day then came back, very frustrating. Tried spare spark plug wires, problem completely dissapeared. I probably moved the wires around a bit when trying new plugs, then it went away as wherever the wires were arcing at moved apart.

Also since my recent episode with a cracked wrist pin, while pulling my cylinder head off, I noticed my dam injectors clogged with that black crap! Also it left a nice puddle of black crap where it sprays in the cylinder head.
I guess before I get my car running again im gonna switch my fuel lines over to achohol compatible fuel lines as I think the black crap is eaten away rubber.

Maybe worth pulling yours if you run e85?

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

Tp respond to everyone:

I have cleaned my injectors once, last year. I may have to do it again. I had black goo on mine, 120 seconds in gasoline and they are good.

The plug wires are OEM replacement NGK, probably have 10,000 on them.

To Alpha D. I have a nearly brand new OEM knock sensor. And my ignition timing is correct.

I got a box of plugs I'll toss in and see what happens.

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

Threw in new plugs! I forgot what my car felt like when it was hauling ass.

New plugs made the car run like a champ. Old plugs were gapped as the should at .028" Any prefernce on gap?

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

I usually have to run .022"-.025" on bigger turbo E85 cars. I have been able to get away with bigger gaps on high boost smaller turbo E85 cars. I really haven't seen bigger gaps help full boost power, a smaller gap will definitely effect your idle and part throttle though for the worse. I have had a bunch of E85 cars that weren't noticeably misfiring but weren't making the power they should, gain good power from new plugs, tighter gap, swapping coils, ignition boxes, etc.

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

I have a dynatek ignition with a gap at .027 and on the dyno Shane said it looked awsome for having such a big gap. That was even on a stock coil and plug wires with no loss of power up top which I think Shane said is what you see when you are getting some spark blow out on higher boost and HP cars. Dynatek FTW!

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

I use NGK BPR7ES plugs.

Currently gapped at .028 If these start to suck, I'll gap some new ones tighter.

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

I have mine at .028 and no misfires yet. I used to have them gapped at .024 on my old setup and didn't have any problems either. I decided to try a bigger gap this time and so far so good.

Re: Bad Misfire at WOT

Ok I lied. The car still breaks up under high load.

Anyone got a working coil I can test drive out? IE come over, take your coil off, test drive me car, put your coil back on.

Anyone down?
