Automatic to manual

I'm sure there has been much talk about people doing this. The main factor is it worth the effort and money?? I'm really serious about changing my setup from an Automatic to a manual. I've asked a couple of experienced dsmer's and i basically got run around answers and how-to's.

Thanks,
Alex

Re: Automatic to manual

Isn't there a VFAQ on it? I thought there was. With the age these cars are getting, it may be worth it on a really clean car, there aren't many left. It isn't all that easy, but not horrible. Expect to spend a weekend on it, maybe just a full day.

Re: Automatic to manual

you need a tranny, driveshaft, rear diff. it is worth it, the manuals take more abuse than autos plus the gas milage. besides manuals are just more fun

Re: Automatic to manual

Step one: Sell automatic car
Step two: Buy manual car

In two easy steps you just saved yourself time, money, and a huge hassle!

Re: Automatic to manual

The true question is how good of a mechanic are you and do you have the right tools to do this?

If you were going to do this, have all the parts you need together. Don't start taking apart the car without having for example the manual transmission.
Get the pedals, shifter cables and all of that stuff first. Then take a weekend and start the conversion.

I am not sure but does the AWD automatic use the same engine/transmission mounts as the Manual AWD. I know there is a difference between the FWD and AWD?

If it were me, I would do the conversion if the parts are easier to get. I wouldn't want the hassle of buying someones used DSM and then finding out that I need to replace parts because the person who owned it abused the car.

Another thing to think about is if you have the manual transmission out of the car, rebuild the trans yourself or send it to get rebuilt by shep, TRE, or Jackson. Get a decent clutch also. Start on a solid driveline so you don't have to take it apart later. Or worse, worry about it breaking when you have higher HP. That and it sucks when the car grinds into gear.

Depending on your goals for the car, you would have to do that anyway if you buy a used manual DSM.

Re: Automatic to manual

For me to do the work that is nothing. its do i want to do it?? there is a vfaq on it, but its for a 1g, i dont know if there is a huge difference for the conversion on a 2g.... as far as my car goes, its got a really nice body, never in an accident, straight as an arrow and very clean. no rust..... i hope to do this soon since the automatic transmission is slipping.. neutral drops ftw

Re: Automatic to manual

Yea I am going to have to agree with kracka. I can almost promise you that you'll get it all done and shit will start breaking on your manual tranny. It's the dsm way really that when you change an engine, change a tranny, or any other big thing that it just doesnt work lol.

Re: Automatic to manual

You have a 1g listed, so I thought you were talking about a 1g. For a 2g I would sell it and buy a manual. There are still quite a few nice ones around. I have a really nice Tsi FWD for sale
