1996 Eagle Talon TSi AWD Project

So my goal was to build a fast reliable car with the highest quality parts for the lowest money. Budget racing at its finest. Sure you can always get better quality parts but my goal was to get the best for the money from reputable reliable name brand companies.

So I started with an untouched virgin canvas that is a 1996 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. I bought the car for $4800 and it was 100% stock minus some really ugly wheels (I mean hideous). It had 89,000 miles and was in fairly good mechanical condition and it pretty good cosmetic condition, minus some light scratches and dings which can be easily fixed. No accidents.

Front bumper had a crack on the bottom due to bottoming it out over the years on driveways and parking barriers and the rear bumper had scratches from I don't know what. The bottom part of the spare tire well that hangs down under the car had a dent in it from some previous owner backing into a high curb or something. So I got the dent pulled out. The interior was clean minus the carpet which looked like it was puked on and some of the plastic trim on the door was cracked. So yeah most of it was minor shit from wear and tear over the last 11-12 years.

So I replaced both front and rear bumpers with new OEM ones. I still have to fix the door/fender dings here and there but they are all minor. As for the interior, I replaced all the broken or worn plastic trim with new OEM ones. Unfortunately, Mitsu no longer makes the carpet so I had to go to an aftermarket one. So I decided to get a black carpet instead of the stock grey. It looks and fits great. I gutted the inside of the car. Cleaned it all out and put it back together with the new carpet. Minus the 2 front seats which are worn, the interior looks new. Back seats looked untouched.

I also did and doing standard maintence and tune up shit. All the coolant lines and pipes replaces, and new timing belt and water pump. New seals and gaskets.

Now the masterpeice begins to take form. Here is what is currently on the car:

FP3065 Turbo w/ Lines,

Welcome, that's a good sized mod list, ever dyno it? Track times?
When you say stage 2x or 3 cams currently being installed, which ones are you referring to? Have you bought them yet?

Thanks. After the car was built up the first time, it only ran a couple days. We've been having problems with tuning it which is why I'm going with DSM link. There are way too many things "talking" to each other (MAF translator to DSM chip to AFC Neo). The main reason I'm building the head is when we were street tuning it, one of the small coolant hoses which is hidden under the engine which we didn't replace (don't ask me why, I guess we didn't see it) blew on a 3rd gear pull and shot out all the coolant and hence the head gasket warped. The head also lifted from the block and cause the boost to shoot through the water jacket and into the radiator which puffed like a balloon. It looks pretty funny. I'll take pics when we get it out of the car, hahaha. Also the oil filter assembly rattled loose and shot the oil out too. Amazingly the engine survived all that at 7500 rpm for about 6 seconds (all hail the 4G63!). The block is fine. Since we had the head off to replace the gasket and head studs, I decided to use the opportunity to build the head. So I got a new (used) head (didn't want to bother resurfacing the old one plus it had some corosion) and valvetrain.

Yeah the cam is an FP. No I haven't gotten the cams yet. The head is at the head shop getting cleaned, sand blasted and measured.

It hasn't been dynoed but let's just say at 18psi before the coolant and oil blew out, it was really really really fast. I can't wait to see how fast it'll be with the built head, new PWR radiator and DSM link. This time, we are inspecting the car and replacing all old hoses and gaskets we haven't done already and making sure everything is tight and secure. Lesson learned. The whole fuel and coolant system is practically new.

I wouldn't go with the FP3 (or FP4) cams, they're made for a stroker. The FP2x would be a good choice if you've got heavy duty dual valve springs, but you can't rev very high with them.

I recently got the FP4R cams, as well as a few others on this board, I really like them. With good single springs like supertech you could rev to around 8500 safely.

Just a few thoughts if you're set on FP cams.

Thanks. I'm getting the Supertech high tension dual springs. We're talking with Supertech to see the best set up they recommend.

Ok here are some pics as we were putting the turbo in.

Thanks. It's a Forced Performance O2 housing. The quality of FP is amazing. The metal, welds, and design are awesome. Unfortunately, you pay the price. That shit ain't cheap, haha.
