Re: The Gun Thread
.223 is a lot cheaper to shoot and can be accurate to over 300 yards easy. I'd probably go with that if you don't need something with long range.

Re: The Gun Thread
Yep, .223 for sure. They are accurate WAY past 300 yards if you get a decent one. Hell, I was shooting 6" groups on iron sights at 300 yards in the military.

.223, but you can also consider 9mm if you want to get away from the standard AR platform. I've been looking at carbines as well, and the upside to 9mm is even less of a cost.
I think you want the AR chambered for 556 if I recall (think that's right) as you can shoot 223 ammo, and it's better for the gun if it's basis is a 556. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Either way, you can also convert an AR to a .22 platform for practice with the weapon and even further savings on ammo.

Re: The Gun Thread
If any of you guys aren't members of the NRA, now is the time. I think it's something like $35 for a year.
But donating to the NRA-ILA is where it really counts. They're the division that actually engages the legislative process. Even if it's only $5, if you want to keep your rights and keep your guns, do it.
This is a rather heavy video for Style but it's relavent and bears a lot of truth. Some of you may recognize Travis Haley. He is a reserve LEO and former Force Recon Marine.

Yep, pretty much the reason I chose it. I love the look of the wood laminate stocks over synthetic, plus the thumbhole stock, and the adjustable cheek riser and butt plate made it an easy decision. I know you can get these aftermarket, it was just nice that it came this way from CZ.

Correct. If it's chambered for 5.56 NATO then you can also shoot .223, but not really recommended the other way around.

Please go to Ruger's website and help support gun rights!
Follow the link below and fill in your information. This will generate a letter to every relevant political office for your address! Ruger has stated they are not collecting this data, nor are they keeping it for any reason other than this purpose. Please share this with as many gun owners as you can.

I got it last night. I took a dremal tool with a tiny cutting disk and cut my old sight in half. Then i took the new night sight and did a quick couple passes with a fine file and it slid in tight. Looks good and now i can adjust it without a special pusher tool that will ding up the sight.

Re: The Gun Thread
Finally got to shoot my scar after like 2 weeks! I went to bills twice before this and it was so busy we didn't get on.
Dialed in my buddies scope. The top right was the first 15 shots or so at 25 yards, then I adjust a bit a was shooting a bit faster and then finally I dialed it to the center groupings. I am in love with this rifle, feels so right! Then I spent like 1.5 hours cleaning it all nice and pretty, I am slow as I am still figuring it all out.
Fun times though! Can't wait to shoot it outdoors.

Re: The Gun Thread
Nice! I'm jealous, I haven't been able to shoot mine yet.
Was that from a bench rest or standing? What are the scope specs? Are you just borrowing the scope to see if you like that particular one, or just wanted to get anything on there to test it out?

Re: The Gun Thread
Question, what kind of magnification should I be looking at for optics. Looking at Leoupold and Trijicon for tactical scopes. Is the number usually up to yards, like 4x would be good at 400 yards?
The scope my buddy borrowed me weighs A TON! My gun is super light without it, like 7lbs, feels great. Once I put the scope on it became really fat. Just like my car looking to drop some weight.
I'd love to be able to hit stuff out to 400-500yards for fun, I think the gun is good for 600 yards or so, but 400-500 seems like plenty even for fun.

Re: The Gun Thread
If you are going to be doing a lot of various ranges, something like a 4-9 or 4-12 power would be good. The 4x does not mean good for 400 yards specifically.
You also need to choose the diameter, like 40mm or 50mm. Bigger diameter is going to let more light in, but also going to bring up the center away from the rifle making it harder to use. But it looks like your rifle has an adjustable cheek riser so that is less of an issue. Better optics also let more light in and have better clarity, but of course you pay for it.
Since it's a combat assault rifle, I might suggest a nice red dot sight. No zoom, but much quicker target acquisition and still a lot better than iron sights. With my dad's M1A Scout and red dot sight I had 2" groups at 100 yds first time I shot it (with mil surplus ammo). The dot itself is only 1 moa so it doesn't cover your target, and has adjustable brightness and an infrared night mode if you feel inclined to wear night vision goggles. Plus they don't weigh anything compared to a scope.

I agree.
How often will you be shooting at 400 yards? Ever tried it with a .223?

Re: The Gun Thread
I think an ACOG would be about perfect on that thing. I have one if you want to borrow it. I think it may still have some desert sand on it too for that authentic feeling
