In the market for cams...
I know I can get by with just about anything out there and it will be plenty for my needs, better than the stock cams could provide anyway, but I just want to know how far I can go with cams until daily driving will be unbearable, I'm prepared to have a rough idle, but I don't want it to stumble and die at every stop light. I just want to go as far as reasonably possible with cams right now so that if I wind up going bigger in the future I don't want to have to turn around and buy another set of cams. I am not willing to install dual springs at this time.
My setup, if you need to know more just ask:
built 2.0 - 8.5:1 compression
head has a mild port job, stock valves, Crower springs and retainers
PTE GT3561
AEM EMS
stock manifolds
As of now I'm very interested in the FP cams, simply because of the price and their selection of grinds. I am not interested in the FFWD DKS cams, so don't bring it up. Simply stated, with FP having seven different grinds and having the setup I do, what would you experienced guys recommend me getting for cams? Thanks in advance!

Re: In the market for cams...
I would (and probably am) going with the FP2's. They are fairly similar to 272's but have a bit more top end and less bottom end. In your case, I would recommend those or the FP2x's.

Re: In the market for cams...
I have not run any of these, but since we talked about it at the dyno day I checked out their site and it looks like the FP2's would be the way to go unless you're looking to do upgraded springs. On the 2.0 and that turbo, you *may* want to consider stepping up so you can rev it out a bit. I'm in the same boat. Decisions decisions... Hopefully someone who as run some of these will speak up.

Re: In the market for cams...
You should hit up eBay, Comp 101200's are the same grind as the FP2's and on eBay you can get new 101200's for like $360 shipped. I am going to be investing in some as soon as I get paid on Thursday day. If you guys buy them all before I get there I am going to have to kick some ass .

Re: In the market for cams...
9guy9(luke) on here installed the FP3s on his built 2.4 last winter and it seems to still idle almost like stock. It has no drivability issues at all. I think he is around 8.5:1, using DSMlink, and running some AGP BB turbo.
Maybe he will chime in here but I am pretty sure I am correct with everything I said above.

Re: In the market for cams...
What about the Comp 101300s? Are those, and anything beyond the FP2s getting into dual spring territory?

Not necessarily. You can get single springs from companies like Manley or Ferrea. Manley's are more cost effective. CVD had them and didn't have a problem with them.
Wait for the HKS 280s. You heard how great they sound on an Evo... I'm sure they sound just as shitty on DSMs.

Re: In the market for cams...
any of the FP grinds are fine with mild springs (including stock)
its the FPx grinds that have the really steep ramps, and thus require baller springage.

WRONG, the FP1x and anything from the FP2x up recommends or requires heavier or dual springs. Only the FP1 & FP2 can use stock springs.

But it clearly states on that page that the FP3 & FP4 require dual springs.

Re: In the market for cams...
actually i can read just fine.
FP3 and FP4 cams: "Dual valve springs RECOMMENDED"
FPX cams: "Dual valve springs REQUIRED"
if he's gonna rev an FP cam to 7500, he'll probably be fine if he pays attention to how he shims the springs. if he wants to rev to 9, then hell no!
now quit arguing semantics with me and cluttering matt's thread.
if you'd like to argue further use the PM feature. (-_-)

Re: In the market for cams...
i believe the Crowers are only 10% more pressure than stock, i'll look into it and edit if necessary.

Re: In the market for cams...
If he's not willing to install dual springs, why bother with a grind he can't wind up the rpm on that 2.0L to go with that large turbo? (-_-) What if he misses a shift, bye-bye valves.

Re: In the market for cams...
I wouldnt worry too much about sprigns/retainers. At AF there a guy (95gsx_racer or something like that) that has been running stock springs/retainers on his 272's and hes revves out to 8500, and has done so for many years. Hes a very knowledgable guy and when he still had his DSM he was running low 11's.

Re: In the market for cams...
I've done a bit of looking for info on the HKS 280 cams and can't find anything about them. Do they require springs beyond what I have?
