Re: Very Bad Vibration

Not yet. Going to grab marks sometime sooon. But with this snow it might not be tonight so I think I may just pull that end cover off and check for play. When I pull it off will anything fall out?
Here's a pic of that drivers axle. I wasn't sure if it was all the way in or not.

Two of the u-joints feel notchy and one in the middle is very smooth, maybe too loose?

The u joints should move smoothly not notchy or binding. If there is any play in a u joint or they don't move smoothly they need to be replaced.

Re: Very Bad Vibration

Well hopefully it is just the u-joints! Grabbing marks driveshaft tomorrow and giving that a try. Really hope it's just u-joints.

Re: Very Bad Vibration

you're wasting your time on the driveshaft, IMO.

Unless the U-joints are so bad there's side to side/in and out play in the joint, it probably won't be your issue.

Most DSMs driving on the road now (wait... are there any other than mine? have notchy U-joints.

I've taken apart about 4-5 in the last few months and... all were notchy.

Re: Very Bad Vibration

I want to make sure before I check the tranny. Don't want to drain/ drop it for nothing.
It just sounds soooo similar to driveshaft thump. I should know in a couple hours.

Sounds like a thump now? Or is it a vibration/bearing type noise?

Re: Very Bad Vibration

Will give you guy's an update once I get a car to go get the driveshaft. Taking wayyyy longer than I expected. But I did mention that it sounds similar to this earlier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDl4TCJpgZ8 (45 sec.)

You need drivetrain load to cause driveshaft thump like that.

With your wheels off the ground and trans in neutral, is the disturbance still present at a specific engine rpm? If so does it go away when you disengage the clutch? (pushed to the floor)

Re: Very Bad Vibration

Only happens while in gear. So if I have it in neutral and rev it everything is fine. Got Marks driveshaft (propeller shaft) and it still happens but it is way less sever. Also now if I have it in a higher gear going slower it will do it more and seems to get better with higher rpm/ speed.
Going to be checking the t-case next.

Re: Very Bad Vibration

Did you try swapping c/v shafts? Sounds like a bad front axle to me

Re: Very Bad Vibration

Ok maintain a specific speed say 40mph does it change severity with different gears all while the wheel speed is consistent?

Re: Very Bad Vibration

Wouldn't that cause a click or some kind of noise while turning?
Also managed to get a CEL to flash from it vibrating so bad.

Re: Very Bad Vibration

Alright so I just drove around for a good while and did all sorts of tests. What I found out was..
While going 30 it was about the worst
While maintaining 40 it seemed to vibrate more rapidly in 5th
Under normal acceleration it was very mild
under about 30% throttle is when it started to happen
*Going uphill was almost impossible without downshifting
1st didn't seem to do it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHCy...ature=youtu.be

Checked the t-case and it spun smooth no sounds coming from it.
Also checked the transmission output shaft and it was ok.
Going to get a new out axle for the drivers side, if it still does it I will get the pass side as well. If neither of those fix it I will be looking deeper into the trans.

Re: Very Bad Vibration

If I were you at this point I would unbolt the t case and set it on the ground then pull the front axles out of the trans. Start the engine and run it through the gears.

Re: Very Bad Vibration

t-case is already off. Do I leave car off when going through the gears once the axles are out? What would I be looking for when doing so?

Start the car and do what I said. If the disturbance is still there you know it has nothing to do with anything past the transmission.
