What to do with this....

I have this huge rust spot on my roof that is deep, like some one had previously bondo-ed the hood and its coming off now. I want to start doing the body work and have it painted, but I don't know what to do with it. It's about a centimeter or more deep. Any advice?

Buy a rust free car? Like...a conquest?

I'm no body expert, but I'd say to just sand it all off, and build it back up with something, then smooth over. Someone on this site will know what to do for sure though.

Hmm, I thought I posted that you should just replace the roof skin, but something hapened and it didn't make it up. Anyways, with all that rust on it, you'd just be best off to replace it.

Re: What to do with this....

My advice is to wear a bikini next time you take a picture that reflects in the windshield. Actually, you'll either have to rebondo it or replace the skin. Trying to get the contour right by pounding it out would take a serious pro. If you want to wait til next winter, I'll give you my whole roof skin with the sunroof. I'm putting the non-sunroof skin in that I didn't get to last winter. It doesn't look to tough to swap except for taking out the windshield.

Re: What to do with this....

Throw some Phosphate cleaner on there. It'll eat the rust away no problem, but if it's rusted all the way through the metal, you'll be left with a big hole!

Cut a hole in it and then you got a sun roof.

Yea I would just find a new shell, or really invest ALOT of time and money into that car if there isnt a whole lot more rust besides the roof and maybe the fenders.

If you drive it in the winter though, the rust comes back fast, even if you fix it... it will probably come back in a couple years.

Re: What to do with this....

Unreal: haha It doesn't have a name, but I've dubbed it my boyfriend since boys suck and I love my car more than any boyfriend haha! And yah, I planted myself right on the hood by the wipers haha!

Tom: I was thinking that. Like cut a hole and duct-tape a piece of plexi glass to the roof...

Peter: Yah I think getting a new shell is going to be easiest. Actually I think what is going to end up having to happen [unfortunately] is I'm going to have to buy a beater AND a shell, wait until winter though, and spend the winter doing the motor swap and maybe some add ons Have her all ready to go in the spring. Which will be a little disappointing. First winter to ever own an awd vehicle [besides my old Explorer] and I don't even get to have any fun with it!

Re: What to do with this....

I needed to throw away my power sunroof because it weighed a ton, so I found some sheetmetal pros and they did this for me. It ended up being about $250.
