Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Got the pan off and pulled the the #1 piston and rod out.
A lot of sludge in the pan:
Oil pickup was dented to shit and covered in more sludge:
After I took the piston and rod out I got a closer look, and noticed that the cylinder is indeed banged up pretty bad. It will definitely need to be bored now.
Rod bearings:
Bearing surface:
One deep gouge in the rod bearing, I forgot to get a good look at the crank:
One more carnage pic for good measure

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
That poor car.
How deep are those marks in the cylinder wall? They look pretty gnarly.
But I still don't see the problem with that piston you keep posting up.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Bought another full shortblock for $150 last night. Needs rings the guy said. It came with waterpipe, front case, ofh, etc, so it was a good deal to say the least. Cylinder walls look glazed, but undamaged, rest of the motor looks fine from external inspection. At least it will be a better motor to start with that the old one. Probably get it on the stand and get it torn down in the next few weeks, get it ridge reamed and torque plate honed, and put new bearings and rings in it. Only thing that slows me down is going to TX to visit Kracka for a few days soon (see: hookers and blow), and moving the middle of June. This thing looks to have some sort of hope of running this year though!

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
So I think tonight I'm going to try this just for shits cause it will cost like $2. Nothing to loose really, mostly trying it for curiosity.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Long time no update. I tried that oil trick in the motor, it dropped about 1/8" in each of the cylinders over a 24hr period. Regardless, I'm going to tear it down and do a stock rebuild.
Piston rings ordered, Chris Carey is supposed to be getting back to me on main and rod bearings here shortly. Still not sure what I will end up going with. Lots of people say the ACL Aluglides work just fine. Then tear down should begin tomorrow. I'm thinking of honing it myself, getting some paint stripper and painting it myself, but bringing it in somewhere to get hot tanked between honing and painting.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
ANYWAYS,
What damn bearings do I buy now? ACL Race? regular ACL's? King? Clevite?
I've always heard good things about the ACL Race, but do I really need them for a stock rebuild? It will see a good bit of abuse eventually, but stock motors handle that just fine too.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
What's the price difference? If its a few bucks even if its not get the race ones hands down. There proven to work in our motors.
