Re: joel's build

Just bought a set of BC272 cams on tuners for $275 shipped.

The only question I have is I was thinking about just using my stock springs and retainers. Do you think that would be a bad choice to make?

Bc272 can run with your stock head with out a prob. However, it's recommended that you upgrade the springs and retainers when putting in cams.

Re: joel's build

How high do you plan to rev? How many miles are on your stock springs/retainers?

The cams will be increasing valve liftand duration over stock, so you will be asking more from your valvetrain which increases your risk of failure. The risk increases more if you plan to rev higher, or your stock components are tired. Whether or not that risk is increased by enough to make it worth upgrading is your call.

If it were me, if the head was coming off I'd get new springs put in. If not, I'd run the stock stuff and just not rev it to the moon, and replace the springs next time the head comes off.

Re: joel's build

The head is going to come off so I think I am going to be smart and do them right away.

The stock springs have 133000 miles and I rev to 7500 rpm.

Re: joel's build

Good call.

You should be able to find a cheap spring upgrade if you are on a budget from crower or similar. Those cams don't appear to be that aggressive that you'd have to fork out for a dual spring or beehive setup. Just a cheap single spring upgrade should be plenty for those cams, and allow you to rev to 8k without worrying much about valve float / jumping. I ran crowers on my 1g with HKS 272's up to 8000rpm.

Re: joel's build

Thanks to cornfed2.4 the engine and trans are out of the car, trans is separated and readt to tear into it.

I am going to spend tomorrow cleaning the engine bay. Then I have to disassemble the head and pull it off.

I am also going to read up on how to do valve springs. If anyone that knows how to do them can maybe help out that would be amazing.

Re: joel's build

Nice work! Once the head is off valve springs aren't too hard but you're going to have to get your hands on a valve spring compressor. Personally if the head is off and you can swing it I would bring it to a shop and have them go through it. A stock valve job at the place that did my cylinder Head is only like $300.

I don't think I am going to do anything like that just put in the new springs and cams and call the good.

Re: joel's build

cleaned up the engine bay some today. Deleted all the evap garbage, and got the engine on its stand. One downer I am not sure what is wrong with the #4 cylinder. 1, 2, and 3 where all dry but in the #4 seemed to have some wet oil in it. Not sure if it is head gasket leaking oil into the cylinder, rings, or valve seals.

Also my evo3 16g was SHOT there was more in out play then I have ever felt on a turbo. I don't know how it even made boost. The up down play was perfect.

Re: joel's build

Little bit of of progress tonight on the head. Got all the exhaust valve springs and valve stem seals replaced. Tomorrow is all the intake valves, and cams. after that the head is ready to go back on.

Re: joel's build

Got a lot of progress today.

Finished installing my new Brian Crower valve springs, new valve seals, and Brian Crower 272 cams.

Got my $8 ebay shift cable bushings installed.

Also cleaned all the head gasket mating surfaces, and installed my H11 head studs.

The only thing I have a question about is this stuff what I want to use when torquing down the head nuts on the studs.

No don't use that stuff. I grabbed a tub of that and Shawn (4seasons69). Said it wasn't the same stuff that you need.

Re: joel's build

You can get by with engine oil if you need to but I would use the arp moly lube. I might still have some. I'll check and see
