Here's a word that really sums it up : context. George Carlin is the best at bringing out the versions of statements and how they effect people by the context they are put in.

Re: A Quote for Thought
Here's another one for good thought:
Quote:
Enter Mexico illegally. Never mind immigration quotas, visas, international law, or any of that nonsense.
Once there, demand that the local government provide free medical care for you and your entire family.
Demand bilingual nurses and doctors.
Demand free bilingual local government forms, bulletins, etc. Procreate abundantly.
Deflect any criticism of this allegedly irresponsible reproductive behavior with, "It is a cultural United States thing. You would not understand, pal."
Keep your American identity strong. Fly Old Glory from your rooftop, or proudly display it in your front window or on your car bumper.
Speak only English at home and in public and insist that your children do likewise.
Demand classes on American culture in the Mexican school system.
Demand a local Mexican driver license. This will afford other legal rights and will go far to legitimize your unauthorized, illegal, presence in Mexico.
Insist that local Mexican law enforcement teach English to all its officers.
Good luck! You'll be demanding for the rest of time or soon dead. Because it will never happen.
It will not happen in Mexico or any other country in the world... Except right here. Land of the naive.

Re: A Quote for Thought
Not sure how I feel about this stuff, I want to say I agree with it but then, this country didn't start out english or english speaking, the Native Americans had their own language, we came over and decided it wasn't right and changed it. Some of the worst crimes ever committed were by our goverment against the indians. Now that our government is established and we have incredible strength and it was founded on principals I do believe in, I want to agree with the statements made as a matter of "American Pride" but I am not sure I exactly think it's right. Did the ends justify the means? Probably. This kind of think makes me think we are a bit arrogant in our dealings with "foreigners". But at the same time, while reading this, I still agree with at least most of it 100%, Just a few things not as much.

Re: A Quote for Thought
....and yet another....
Quote:
Whether you like George Bush or not this is good..
Things that make you think a little........
1. There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq during the month of January.....
In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the month of January.
That's just one American city, about as deadly as the entire war torn country of Iraq.
2. When some claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war, state the following:
FDR...led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost an average of 112,500 per year.
Truman...finished that war and started one in Korea, North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,334 per year.
Eisenhower started the Vietnam conflict. Vietnam never attacked us. Johnson...turned Vietnam into a quagmire. >From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost an average of 5,800 per year.
Clinton...went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent, Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.
3. In the two years since terrorists attacked us President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.
The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but...It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation.
We've been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.
It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick killing a woman.
Wait, there's more.......................
Some people still don't understand why military personnel do what they do for a living. This exchange between Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one man's explanation of why men and women in the armed services do what they do for a living. This is a typical, though sad, example of what some who have never served think of our military.
JOHN GLENN ON THE SENATE FLOOR Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2004 11:13
Senator Howard Metzenbaum to Senator Glenn: "How can you run for Senate when you've never held a real job?"
Senator Glenn: "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions & my plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions. I was in the space program.
It wasn't my checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was not a nine-to-five job, where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank. I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day... to a veteran's hospital and look those men - with their mangled bodies - in the eye, and tell THEM they didn't hold a job! You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows and orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee... and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their Dads didn't hold a job. You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch those waving flags.
You stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell ME that those people didn't have a job? I'll tell you, Howard Metzenbaum; you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men - SOME MEN - who held REAL jobs. And they required a dedication to a purpose - and a love of country and a dedication to duty - that was more important than life itself. And their self-sacrifice is what made this country possible.
I HAVE held a job, Howard! What about you?"
For those who don't remember - During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney representing the Communist Party in the USA.
If you can read this, thank a teacher.... If you are reading it in English thank a Veteran.

Re: A Quote for Thought
I haven't quite decided what I think of these yet:
Quote:
William Blake (1757-1827):
Proverbs of Hell
1. In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy.
2. Drive your cart and your plow over the bones of the dead.
3. The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.
4. Prudence is a rich, ugly old maid courted by Incapacity.
5. He who desires but acts not, breeds pestilence.
6. The cut worm forgives the plow.
7. Dip him in the river who loves water.
8. A fool sees not the same tree that a wise man sees.
9. He whose face gives no light, shall never become a star.
10. Eternity is in love with the productions of time.
11. The busy bee has no time for sorrow.
12. The hours of folly are measur'd by the clock; but of wisdom, no clock can measure.
13. All wholesome food is caught without a net or a trap.
14. Bring out number, weight and measure in a year of dearth.
15. No bird soars too high, if he soars with his own wings.
16. A dead body revenges not injuries.
17. The most sublime act is to set another before you.
18. If the fool would persist in his folly he would become wise.
19. Folly is the cloak of knavery.
20. Shame is Pride's cloke.
21. Prisons are built with stones of law, brothels with bricks of religion.
22. The pride of the peacock is the glory of God.
23. The lust of the goat is the bounty of God.
24. The wrath of the lion is the wisdom of God.
25. The nakedness of woman is the work of God.
26. Excess of sorrow laughs. Excess of joy weeps.
27. The roaring of lions, the howling of wolves, the raging of the stormy sea, and the destructive sword, are portions of eternity, too great for the eye of man.
28. The fox condemns the trap, not himself.
29. Joys impregnate. Sorrows bring forth.
30. Let man wear the fell of the lion, woman the fleece of the sheep.
31. The bird a nest, the spider a web, man friendship.
32. The selfish, smiling fool, and the sullen, frowning fool shall be both thought wise, that they may be a rod.
33. What is now proved was once only imagin'd.
34. The rat, the mouse, the fox, the rabbit watch the roots; the lion, the tyger, the horse, the elephant watch the fruits.
35. The cistern contains: the fountain overflows.
36. One thought fills immensity.
37. Always be ready to speak your mind, and a base man will avoid you.
38. Every thing possible to be believ'd is an image of truth.
39. The eagle never lost so much time as when he submitted to learn of the crow.
40. The fox provides for himself, but God provides for the lion.
41. Think in the morning. Act in the noon. Eat in the evening. Sleep in the night.
42. He who has suffer'd you to impose on him, knows you.
43. As the plow follows words, so God rewards prayers.
44. The tygers of wrath are wiser than the horses of instruction.
45. Expect poison from the standing water.
46. You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough.
47. Listen to the fool's reproach! it is a kingly title!
48. The eyes of fire, the nostrils of air, the mouth of water, the beard of earth.
49. The weak in courage is strong in cunning.
50. The apple tree never asks the beech how he shall grow; nor the lion, the horse, how he shall take his prey.
51. The thankful receiver bears a plentiful harvest.
52. If others had not been foolish, we should be so.
53. The soul of sweet delight can never be defil'd.
54. When thou seest an eagle, thou seest a portion of genius; lift up thy head!
55. As the caterpiller chooses the fairest leaves to lay her eggs on, so the priest lays his curse on the fairest joys.
56. To create a little flower is the labour of ages.
57. Damn braces. Bless relaxes.
58. The best wine is the oldest, the best water the newest.
59. Prayers plow not! Praises reap not!
60. Joys laugh not! Sorrows weep not!
61. The head Sublime, the heart Pathos, the genitals Beauty, the hands and feet Proportion.
62. As the air to a bird or the sea to a fish, so is contempt to the contemptible.
63. The crow wish'd every thing was black, the owl that every thing was white.
64. Exuberance is Beauty.
65. If the lion was advised by the fox, he would be cunning.
66. Improvement makes strait roads; but the crooked roads without improvement are roads of genius.
67. Sooner murder an infant in its cradle than nurse unacted desires.
68. Where man is not, nature is barren.
69. Truth can never be told so as to be understood, and not be believ'd.
70. Enough! or too much.

"For those who don't remember - During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney representing the Communist Party in the USA. "
Sorry guys..i find that to be a little disturbing. A man who served his time representing america is also one that represented what america hated during those times in war that he was in. A man who was in the space program that was only meant to beat the communist party of the soviets..
As for Andy Rooney. Great speech. Straight and to the point. But if this had gained alot of attention, i bet he would get alot of media.
*I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you are qualified for any special loan programs, government sponsored bank loans or tax breaks, etc., so you can open a hotel, coffee shop, trinket store, or any other business.
We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms, so that decades later they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document; and open to their interpretations.*
hmm.......

Re: A Quote for Thought
Another for thought:
Quote:
The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary, Sunday, 12/18/05.
Herewith at this happy time of year, a few confessions from my beating heart: I have no clue who Nick & Jessica are. I see them on the cover of People & Us constantly when I am buying my dog biscuits & kitty litter. I often ask the checkers at the grocery stores. They never know who Nick & Jessica are either. Who are they? Will it change my life if I know who they are & why they have broken up? Why are they so important? I don't know who Lindsay Lohan is either, & I do not care at all about Tom Cruise's wife.
Am I going to be called before a Senate committee & asked if I am a subversive? Maybe, but I just have no clue who Nick & Jessica are. If this is what it means to be no longer young. It's not so bad.
Next confession: I am a Jew, & every single 1 of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees. It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers & sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a crèche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.
I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, & I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick & tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution, & I don't like it being shoved down my throat.
Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship Nick & Jessica & we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where Nick & Jessica came from & where the America we knew went to.
In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke, it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking. Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show & Jane Clayson asked her "How could God let something like this Happen?" (regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound & insightful response. She said, "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government & to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing & His protection if we demand He leave us alone?"
In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, & we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school . the Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, & love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.
Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped & we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK. Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, & why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, & themselves. Probably, if we think about it long & hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with "WE REAP WHAT WE SOW."
Funny how simple it is for people to trash God & then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail & they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar & obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school & workplace.

Re: A Quote for Thought
I like, especially since it is ripping on the stupid fucking ACLU:
Quote:
Marines are always taught:
1) Keep your priorities in order
2) Know when to act without hesitation.
A Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and a member of the ACLU. One day he shocked the class when he came in, looked to the ceiling, and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes.
The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop.
Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am God. I'm still waiting."
It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What the hell is the matter with you? Why did you do that?"
The Marine calmly replied, "God was too busy today protecting America's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid shit and act like an asshole. So He sent me."

Re: A Quote for Thought
I agree with a lot of this.
However I agree with what Brandon is saying. BUT, if you work in the service industry, or any industry, for that matter, where you deal with people constantly who are primarily American and speak full English, you should deffinately work on improving your english. However, no one should ever have to give up their native tongue if they don't want to. Period.
I'm not racist by any means, but it does bother me that Somali's can come to America, get government funding to live here, basically for free, and then come to my school, jump people, start fights, even hold a gun to my friends head, and not get in any trouble for it because they are a minority. Just because you are a "minority", which in itself is a logn shot these days, doesn't mean you are stupid or don't know better than to do things like that. They are just like anyone else and should be treated the same. If you come to America to better your life and your family's life, then good for you, but I think it's wrong to do that by living off of tax payers and the government.
Also, I agree fully with the homosexuality thing. It's someone's choice to prefer the same sex. It's your opinion if you don't agree with it. I think it's wrong to critisize someone for that and judge them for it. You don't have to date them, so oh well? And it pisses me off when people are like "Oh I don't like it when they hit on me." Get over it. All you have to say is, "I'm sorry, I don't swing that way" and they get the point. Deal with it.
The tattoo and piercing thing is an odd subject. Honestly, being that I have 8 piercings and going on 2 tattoos, I have no problem. But everything in moderation. When I walk into Wal-mart and see some one with tattoos and piercings all over their face, in his lips, nose, cheeks, ears, whatever, I tend to think it a little inappropriate. To me, that many piercings and tattoos in such visable places as your face shows an extreme lack of self respect. There's a girl at my dad's work with little lizard foot prints starting from the middle of her cheek leading all the way down past her shirt leading to God only knows where, and I can't help but think why you would want to grow old and have your grand kids ask you why a lizard stepped on your cheek. Self Expression? Maybe. But still, why ruin your image for the rest of your life? I know a lot of you would say, "Yah, but you permanently branded a Mitsubishi logo on yourself." The difference is that mine is only visable if I allow it to be.
The hate the rich, pity the poor and Bill Gates thing is so true. It's all in what you make of yourself.
OK I'm done ranting about it. I'm just bored and thought I'd throw in my opinion on things.

Re: A Quote for Thought
...
Quote:
While I don't think the American GI has anything on Jesus Christ, you really can't compare the two except on this one issue, I think this is a very interesting perspective on America and its people.
In case we find ourselves starting to believe all the anti-American sentiment and negativity, we should remember England 's Prime Minister Tony Blair's words during a recent interview. When asked by one of his Parliament members why he believes so much in America , he said:
"A simple way to take measure of a country is to look at how many want in ... And how many want out."
Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you:
1. Jesus Christ
2. The American G. I.
One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.
If you want to pass this on I think it would be appropriate, as many seem to forget BOTH of them.
