Re: Do not idle for more than 3 minutes or else..
I am pretty sure it is 30%, I read an article in ski magazine called mr.turnoff about a guy who would turn ideling cars off in the mountains because there is a law against ideling because of mountains preventing smog from escaping. Think about all the truckers that let theit trucks idle 24/7, busses sitting at bus stops for 15min, people sitting in traffic, I would say 30% is an underestimation.
And you do deal with smog here, They have days where the air is so bad they tell people with asma to stay inside. And if you watch the local weather channel you would see that the air quality level is rarely at the good level, it is usually at the moderate level. Where do you think it is going to be in 5 years with all of the polution we create, US alone uses 1/4 of the world oil supply.

Burt has been posting his info/source, since you're arguing with everything he says why don't you post up some info/sources to back your side up?

hahaha hilarious, I think ski magazine is a vary reliable source! I can scan the article for you. this is not the ski magazine article, 1.5billion gallons wasted ideling each year http://www.norwichbulletin.com/news/...nt/x1611223141

Re: Do not idle for more than 3 minutes or else..
I'm not arguing the amount of fuel used idling. 30% does seem high, and a skiing magazine as the source seemed dubious but I'm not saying it isn't true. My argument is that it is no business of the government. If I want to spend my money to buy gas so I can idle running the heat, A/C, my laptop, tv or really just because I feel like it, why shouldnt I be able to?
How does me idling infringe on your freedom? I think what the law really says is that someone else feels like they are paying too much for gas, so they are going to tell me what I can and can't do with mine so they can get theirs cheaper.
Who's infringing on whos rights?
If the trucking/cab/etc companies want to save some money they can cut down on the idling, but maybe they have weighed the pro's and con's and decided the extra money for gas is worth it, whatever their reasons may be. The point is it is their money and their gas and their trucks.

Re: Do not idle for more than 3 minutes or else..
We live in a society where everyone depends on the government to tell them what to do, if you don't agree then you are lying to yourself. We are told what we can and cannot do every day by the govt. You do have the freedom to do what ever you want with your gas but when the extra pollution your car is creating from all of the unnecessary idling is causing the air quality to shift into the unhealthy air quality category. You are taking away the rights of people with asthma and other respertory illnesses to be able to go outside and breath. Or when the air quality is as bad as it is in Tokyo, the rights of everyone to be able to go outside and breathe clean air. I was reading they have oxygen stations around the city because normal air contains 21%oxygen and in Tokyo it is around 12% I think it said. Anyways, if you are somewhat intelligent when it comes to the real world you would know pollution is bad, cars pollute, idling creates unnecessary pollution and wastes fuel causing there to be less fuel driving up the prices for everyone else. Everyone loses from idling, even you merkzu.

Re: Do not idle for more than 3 minutes or else..
I'm not thrilled about the city passing a law about this. I don't like to be told what to do. I'd be more comfortable with an ad campaign or something similar encouraging people to not idle unnecessarily, but you can't dispute that idling is a waste and adds to pollution.
T oadd to this strategy, I would also add some wisdom from a city planner that was on public radio the other day. Road design does not encourage efficient fuel usage. He suggested replacing most stop sogns with round abouts that would allow people to continue moving. Idling at stop signs and lights, then having to reaccelerate to speed is a big waste of fuel.

We should just pass laws banning all pollution and wasted energy.

you try getting a 75 peterbuilt to start in the dead of winter. usually they will only leave them idling for that long because they are in winter and that shit dont like to start and it gets cold. yes idleair is nice but sometimes its just as cost effective to leave it idle

Re: Do not idle for more than 3 minutes or else..
Ok, so let the truckers idle their engines during December and January, or anytime it dips below a certain temp. Its not the private passenger cars doing the majority of the idling; its the taxis, cops, buses, and trucks.

Re: Do not idle for more than 3 minutes or else..
I agree cowboy, round abouts do make more sense. But how much gas do you waste making a complete circle at every intersection?
Merkzu I think is onto something, let's just make all pollution illegal that way no one can do anything without breaking the law. We will become a nation of inmates.
I thought they had a new technology that allowed diesel trucks to not idle durning the winter, don't you really just need a diesel tank heater to keep the diesel from freezing?

Less gas than sitting and idling for a few minutes then having to accelerate back up to speed.

Re: Do not idle for more than 3 minutes or else..
I just skipped over most of this thread. What should have happened in the first place is an electric motor that assists the engine when you come to a stop. This is how: your engine shuts off if your foot is off the gas pedal for 10seconds. Then when you want to go again, the electric motor spins up the gas engine. so simple. Could have been done decades ago. would have saved millions of gallons. All they need to do is implement this for every single production car by 2010, since they are already in the 2009 run.

You are right fatty, that is basically what they are doing now with hybrids. Now they just need to perfect the rechargeable battery and I believe they are well on their way.
Save the childern in africa, don't leave your car idling!

They kinda do this in a hybrid already. Everything is electric so you don't need the engine running to control your power steering, brakes, etc. And when you get to 15mph, the IC engine fires and off ya go, but you wouldn't need a separate motor to "spin up" the IC engine, that's why they have starters, which does that. It's just so fucking expensive to put in nearly 100% of cars today, it wouldn't be cost effective to stay in business. One of my instructors here at school, who worked for Toyota for 20 years and was a Prius Tech, said that the government gives Toyota America like $60,000 for each Prius they sell. So in reality, if the government and shit wasn't all about saving the environment too, a hybrid would cost like $80,000+!!! Kinda off topic I guess...
And plus, a lot of companies are now implementing technology that makes the engines (with the exceptions of 4 cyls for now) run on half the cylinders under cerrtain condtions, so there's a pollution control. (new honda v6 and GM v8s in trucks and the corvette) Plus, wouldn't constantly shutting off and starting an engine be hell on it? I know the hybrids do this, but they run 1 liter engines, which aren't big and heavy enough to really have a lot of weight or mass to be taking that abuse. That's something else to think about.
