Try this old mechanic trick. Get some belt dressing and put a little on one belt and see if it goes away. If not try the other belt.

In my experience if a belt was making noise, it was always the alternator belt. Could be a sign of a failing alternator also. Had that happen also.
Ok so all i have to do is try tightening the screw/bolt for the alternator and see if it stops squealing or not. Then if it does try the belt dressing??

Ok but what if i do the belt dressing and find out that its the alternator and its tight?? do i get it tested to see if its bad? or what

Then it would likely be a bad belt, it could have oil on it. That usually goes away though. Might just be a crappy belt that gets hard in the cold. It probably just isn't tight enough.

First you loosen the bolt that connects to the alternator, then you tighten the tensioner bolt.

Yep, 12mm, goes the normal clockwise direction. You will likely have to push the bolt down once in a while, it likes to ride up. If it pops out, then you get to loosen it back up and start all over again.

A ratchet wrench is your friend when it comes to tightening the ALT belt

Yeah, that or a flex head ratchet. It is really quite easy though.

I did a V-8 swap into a Astro van, belts squealed like crazy but they were tight. Dad hands me a bar of soap and says start it and let it run on the belt. Never squealed again.

Depending on the last time you changed the belts, it maybe worth just replacing both when you go to the autoparts store. That way you know you have good belt for the winter and wont have to mess with them for a while.

Re: 95 talon awd

My alternator belt was giving me the same bs just the other day, although when i tightened mine down i had the same problem. It wouldnt stay tight. Since mine doesnt have the adjustment screw all i did was put a washer in between the two tension pts on the front of the alternator that the bolt goes through. Havnt had a problem since.

Dont tighten it too tight, ive had one snap on me because of it being too tight. And if the belt is squeeling, chances are that the components are fine its just the belt. Soap works very good as dressing, same with wax pens.

Well that might solve it for a little bit but using a bar of soap everytime the car squeels seems kind of dumb to me.

On a date,

"Excuse me for a minute, my cars belts are squeeling. Do you have a bar of soap I can use?"

Just use the soap technique as a tool (same as belt dressing, doesn't matter which one you use)

After checking to see if both belts are tightened

Apply it to one belt, if it doesn't stop
apply to second belt

If the squeeling stops on the belt, you know which one is giving you problems.

If it doesn't stop, replace belts and see if that stops it

How long have they been squeeling? You could have burned through one by now. still don't rule out the alternator.

All of the belts are about a month old and they squeal pretty bad from takeoff and continues through second gear but stops after about a block but it squeals after every takeoff!!

Its really embarassing!!
