Re: DSM V8 swaps?

It wouldn't be that tough at all if you're starting with an AWD DSM, the back is already set up for RWD in a sense. You could probably even get away with using the stock rear end and suspension with a stockish LS1 and a custom driveshaft. It's a good idea because it's not common, it should fit pretty easily, it wouldn't be that hard to do, and it would look stock on the outside. I thought it was dumb with the EVO, but it'd be cool with a real DSM. Besides that, have you driven a Camaro lately? They are just junk compared to any 1G I've driven.

Why is there so much argument about this? If you think it's cool, no one fucking cares. If you think it's gay, again, no one fucking cares. No one will ever be right or wrong when it comes to what they want to do when modding their car because everyone has different tastes.

I, personally, appreciate the fab work that goes into swaps like that and enjoy a torquey v8 in a light car.

As far as the argument about "if you want an ls1, buy a fucking camaro" goes... an ls-x camaro or firebird will set you back anywhere from 8k up. NOW, pick up an AWD dsm shell (less than 1k), grab an ls1 and trans setup for somewhere around 2k, plus another grand or 2 for everything else you'll need to get it in the chassis and make it run, and you're still only at like 5 or 6k. Granted the numbers are all off the top of my head and I havn't exactly researched prices on stuff like this for awhile, but a project like that would still end up being less than just picking up a sweet boat of a camaro, and it'd be faster too

It would look a hell of a lot better than a camaro too!

Re: DSM V8 swaps?

When he pull up next to you and you hear a lumpy V8 and he starts to do a RWD burnout, you will see . But for real its not like it would be a waste. It would be a fun car to drive and it would be a head turner. And lets be honest, It wouldnt be that hard. Unless you are a big pussy!

And this goes back to the AWD vs RWD which I won't get into

If you want different don't swap a chevy, ford V8. That isn't different... It has been done way too much....

I think there are better swap engines for DSMs that haven't been discovered yet.

First look at how the engine sits. You would have to fab something up so that the engine would sit 90 degrees from where it usually sits. How about finding something that will sit in the same position? I don't think if you turned a V8 it would fit. So chop 2 cylinders off and look at V6s

What would work for a V6 maybe. Has anyone tried stuffing a Mitsubishi GT3000 engine into this thing? There is a lot more room in a 1G then a 2G so maybe it would work...

There is also the V6 that they use in the buick/pontiac that has a supercharged engine.

Swaping something from a VW?

I think Toyota has a nice V6 from a Lexus that is 3.0L (1mz-fe I think) that can be supercharged. It has been swapped into a MR2 so it has to be compact enough This would be my choice if I had to swap I love the sound of a nice tuned V6 almost over a V8

And if you don't like the V8 or V6 or 4g63 what other I4 would you have under the hood? I can't think of any. I love that 4g63...

I am not arguing that swapping is a bad idea, just think of other possiblilities.

Not to steal away this thread but I like the Idea of swapping the 4g63 into other cars myself

Myself I am looking at this more

http://www.amazon.com/Build-Cheap-Sp.../dp/0760322872

Then making it 4g64 powered because you can mate a RWD trans to the engine, bolt on a head from a 4g63 with turbo...blah blah blah .... and you would have one fast homebuilt car!

Also that RX-7 powered 4g63 was cool to look at.

Re: DSM V8 swaps?

Mounting a V8...
If I remember right the 1Gs have 2 crossmembers that go from where the steering rack is to where the radiator is. O look you just found 2 mounting points.
Now cut the subframe where the rack is that goes from driver to pass side. cut maybe 6" out of it. Now connect the 2 halfs on the bottom under where the tranny would go. Another mounting point.
Now cut up the firewall and floor a little. Make a tunnel and have a driveshaft made. OMG I just made an RWD V8 1G.(clearly I know there is some more stuff but thats just the main things)

If I remember right I was told an LS1 is 30 somthing inches long which is plenty of space from front to back. Also people do RWD eclipses and our 4 banger fits sideways. And a v8 is just as long as a I4 the only difference is how wide it is.

(All of this was not researched just thought of it off the top of my head)

Re: DSM V8 swaps?

Someone on talk or tuners built their own LS1 1g years ago; i remember reading the thread.

If i was going to swap a V8 into something i would use a different platform like an FC or an S14.

Re: DSM V8 swaps?

The point to this is not for the best performing car or for the swap to be easy. The point is to be different and have a fun car.

So make something that is chevy V8 powered and be different

Re: DSM V8 swaps?

I just am sick of bolting shit on. It gets old after awhile, and anyone can do it. I think it'd be so much fun making something like a 1G w/ an LS1 be a tire smoking fun car to drive. Haha, people wouldnt expect a frickin v8! And there is no replacement for displacement.

I think a challenge would be a lot of fun, and those other swaps you listed just suck. I'd want something thats actually performance orientated... not some shitty commuter car engine that has absolutely no aftermarket support.

Re: DSM V8 swaps?

On a different note, my uncle today said Mopar Connection used to sell subframes for Conquests to mount a 360 or 440 in them!!
