Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

Wags has it's up's and downs. The killer with Wags is they cater to who brings in the money. Wehn we dealt with them in the good old QPR days they had a new motor almost every other week it seemed like. Of course they are going to do some of their best work with us compared to the 1 time customer. But we still got shafted all to many times when they would push stuff out to get their circle track cars done in time, that's their big money area.

This has now been added to the list of stuff we are going to bring on the site, a list of ALL area machine shops and hopefully a section to post a comment about them when you've used them. Chances are any machine shop will know how to do the work, it's the work ethic of those at the shop to get the job doen right and it's the consumers job to check to make sure they not only know what they need, but know how to check the results.

Yeah, I have dealt with Wag's because they are about a mile from my house. I actually told QPR about Wag's and that is how they found them. They have all the capabilities, but most of their workers are sub-par. I had my head done there outside of QPR and had to take it back because they messed up. The valve guides were pushed in at totally random lengths, like almost 1/2 inch off!! Not good with a high lift cam. It probably would have smashed the seals even on a stock cam.

That's why I like Gosh. You don't get some $10/hr kid working on your stuff, you get the owner with ~25 years experience. I've yet to have a problem with anything done there, and Shindley had a lot of DSM stuff done there as well. Plus he's got his own torque plate for 2.0's and 2.4's.

QPR didn't have any special doohickies, that was just sales talk.

QPR had torque plates and some other special jigs made for assembly. I believe LSE has them now.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

For what its worth my 2.4 was machined by Wags and assembled by QPR. I have just under 25,000 miles on the engine and it is still going strong. I had the block bored .20 over torque plated to 100 ftlbs on arps. But it seems quite a few friends of mine have had bad experiences at Wags, one ex-employee told me a few dirty secrets about how they treat motors while they dissasemble them. Something about "ringing" the cranks to get the bearings to pop off. I can't recommend them.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

The motors Wags done for us were brought in completely torn down. We got our engine back within 3 business days. I guess we have good experiences with them so yea.

I'm with steve though. Spend the extra couple dollars and have someone that specializes in motor work do the motor work. The few places I've had do my flywheels around my house don't understand the .610 step concept. Some red rooster that qpr sent me to did it perfect. If you cant get a flywheel right, I don't think I'd trust them with a motor. That's my .02. I'm done now.

I have heard good things about DGmotors but I am not sure if they have any experience in the DSM land.

Might be worth looking into though. www.dgmotors.biz

Headwerks is in Bloomington, but their prices are probably more then your average DSMer wants to spend. But they do top notch work. No BS.

I'd second Steve's recommendation to use Gosh if you can handle the drive. He did the head on my Talon. Good bang for the buck. Very professional.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

Just as another note, the Napa in Savage (where Brent had his work done) is where I had my head worked on. The guy I spoke with was Chris. He is the one that worked on mine. Don't know if he's still there. But when I brought in the head, he saw it for about a second and said "another DSM head to fix" so HE knows the heads. Whether or not he is still there, I have no idea. He did a damn good job on mine.

Other than that, I would definately listen to Steve, Shane, Jet and some of the other senior members. They have had the most dealings with machine shops in higher horsepower applications. They know their shit!!
