Re: Make slowboy not so slow

Center stud is VERY important. I had that same issue on my car. Remove it, install RTV on it, and put it back on. I got RTV at work if you want me to do it for you.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow

Using RTV on the center stud didn't do anything, still pisses oil. So I'm going to take off the manifold and helicoil it.

I did a compression test with my tester so I can compare the results to the old rings.

170-167-167-165

So that's almost an average 10psi across the board better than before, so it seems that the rings did seat pretty well. However, the smoking issue is getting worse. It's especially bad after letting it sit for awhile, just billows smoke out the exhaust. After awhile it'll smoke less, especially after I go WOT for a bit, then sometime later it'll smoke more randomly. I'm thinking the new valve seals were installed improperly. Either that or the turbo seals weren't installed right.

Try taking out the catch can and see if that helps any. If is geting pressuare back in to the the engine with messed up seals it could make it smoke more with it hooked up.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow

I'll try that in the next day or two.

During the ksports install tonight I verified the front swaybar was on the loose setting. Thanks Matt D for answering questions about adjustments. They were just on there really tight, had to use some solvent to break them loose. Set them about the same as they height as the tokicos were before. Still need to get on a completely flat surface to level it out. Test driving begins tomorrow, if they're too stiff the Tokicos go back on.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow

These things aren't bad at all. Right now I have them on stiffness 24 out of 36 on all four, and it's a tad bouncy, I will probably bump them up a few to 27 or so. I want to see what 10 feels like, haha. Streets of downtown Minneapolis might be another story though.

Didn't do too much cornering, but the few I did the car feels a lot snappier. I'll do more testing on the way home.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow

I found out the center section of the turbo is bad, so that could be the cause of the oil burning. Unhooking the catch can setup didn't help at all.

Since the car is down for the week, I did quite a bit of work I've been too lazy to get around to the past year or two. My car has had the SRS and AntiLock dash lights on for a long time now, both computers are toast.

Two months ago I removed the braking portion of the ABS, but today I took up the carpet and passenger foot rest and took out the computer and a couple feet of wiring.

Removed the passenger airbag:

Here is the cover about to go back in:

Airbag computer:

And a bunch of wiring that was no longer needed. Left group was for the airbag computer, right group was for an unknown harness under the passenger seat. The only thing I saved out the entire bundle was the ebrake light cable (hanging yellow)

Are you done buying questionable used parts yet?

The right group is wires for the stock infinity amp under the passenger seat.

Thanks. At first I thought it was for a powered passenger seat, but there's too many wires. Also, that explains why the red wire that's hanging had power without the key on. It sparked on me when it touched a ground, lol.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow

Meh, it was over a year ago, I'm not too concerned. I got it for $550 under new, so a year of use and $350 fixing up isn't the worst case scenario in my book. If I had more money a year ago I would have bought new, but that wasn't the case. Yes I learned my lesson about used turbos.

Oh yea, I figured out why that bottom center manifold hole was leaking oil everywhere. I thought it was because the threads were stripped, but it's because the bolt threads were so worn down it didn't grab the threads. I put a good quality longer than stock stud in there and it seals up really well, problem solved! Since the other studs are all rusty, I think I'm going to get all SS studs and locking nuts to make it look nicer.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow

Wow, been awhile since I posted in my thread. Mostly because not much has changed. Since I drove back to Minnesota in early June, I've driven my car maybe 5 or 6 times, mostly to meets. The ironic thing is that aside from the dead battery issue from letting it sit too long, the car has worked the entire time, just no need to drive I guess.

Fixed the coolant leaking and disappearing issues, and I no longer have oil leaking/burning issues. I've driven a little over a thousand miles and the oil level is still at the top, before it would have burned a quart by now.

About 2 or 3 weeks ago I took off all my intake and intercooler pipes to have them powdercoated black. Also did a VC that says mitsubishi, but had the letter paint ground off so they're shiny silver. I noticed all the pipes had a ton of oil buildup in them, I suspected it was remnants of two bad turbos that leaked oil everywhere, all stuck in the intercooler still. I got all the pipes back last week, and finally got around to removing the bumper and intercooler tonight, along with a couple other pipes.

Right now the intercooler is still draining oil, I'm going to wash it out with some solvent later on and hopefully get it re-attached tomorrow. The only bad part is that when my bumper was last put on, the shop used super rusty bolts and all but two broke right away when I tried to get them out, so I have a bit of drilling to do, but shouldn't take too long.

I'm hoping this powdercoating will make the engine bay look a lot nicer, I'll post pics when I have everything put back together in the next day or two.

Good to hear! I would use gas for cleaning out the front mount. That's what I used on mine and it worked great.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow

From tuning today.

Boost 28ish, spike to almost 29 and slightly fading to 27.

Comparison to last year. Notice the 400rpm better spool, plus an extra 17hp with basically the same boost level.

And just for fun:

The cruise shall be fun indeed

Re: Make slowboy not so slow

Oh, I should mention the turbo is maxed out. At 21psi I was making 356hp I believe, the gains were diminishing with every psi added. We had it at 30 but backed it to 28. Gotta get me one of those HTA setups... lol.
