Re: The Gun Thread

From my limited experience I would agree that a revolver would be a more reliable choice, thanks for mentioning that. The semi-autos jammed twice yesterday.

Re: The Gun Thread

Semi-Auto's can be extremely reliable and are far more capable than a revolver could ever hope to be.

Reliability has a lot to do with ammo choice (not using inferior rounds) and also basic maintenance on the weapon. Keep it clean and happy. Also do not buy a cheap semi-auto. Something brand name and known to be quality will be better.

Also, a full size semi-auto in 9mm will have a clip that is 14+ rounds per clip, versus a punny 5 or 6 shots.

As for a round that Janelle could handle, I would throw my hat into the 9mm ring for that one. Start slinging 14 9mm hollow points at an invader and tables will turn.

Some good quality brands for a 9mm would be Glock, Springfield, or (i'll get crucified for this) a Baretta 92fs. If it military capable you know it is home defense capable.

I was looking at the Glock G17 and G19 earlier today.

Re: The Gun Thread

Both quality choices. If you don't plan to carry deff don't be afraid to keep on the full sized side of things like the G17. The accuracy is going to be much better.

As for a personal preference point here.. I'm not a fan of bobtail pistols with the safeties on the triggers vs a traditional lever selector. Makes me too nervous about an accidental fire. This is all the reason I bought my FNX .40

Re: The Gun Thread

Glocks feel like garbage to me when i shoot them.

My personal preference (from what i've shot) has been SIGs and HK.

I've heard great things about Springfields XD line as well though.

Re: The Gun Thread

The indoor range nearby has a lot of rental guns available so I'll have to go try a bunch out before picking one.

Do yourself a favor and test drive a Sig Sauer 226, H&K USP (in 9mm), and XD before deciding.

I know I may be the odd man out here, but Glocks never quite felt right in my hand when firing.

OK will look into these. The 9mm I shot last weekend was a Springfield Armory XD.

Re: The Gun Thread

I'd chime in for a Glock. I own a Glock, Smith, and Ruger and the Glock is by far my favorite. It has almost a revolver like simplicity and its reliable, I've never had a FTF or FTE. I've also spend some time behind the trigger of a xDm 9mm, wasnt my favorite due to the higher bore center but the interchangeable back straps were nice for shooters with smaller or larger than average hands.

Threw some Bulgarian furniture on my new shotgun. Wood is so much nicer than plastic

+1 on the Glock. I like Glocks, but everyone has their own preference.

Re: The Gun Thread

I would love to have a revolver for a carry gun, some day I'll get around to getting that .357 snub I've been wanting since I took the class...

But, for home defense, nothing but a shotgun for this guy.

Re: The Gun Thread

So many weapons...

I own:
12 gauge
30/30 aka a "dirty 30"
semi-auto 22
over under, think its a 12 gauge and 22, have to look at it.

I inheriated these when my father passed and they are all hunting weapons. I haven't shot them yet, plan on this summer up north.

Re: The Gun Thread

I'm pretty sure I'm decided on a Springfield XDm now, but I'm torn on which caliber to get.

http://www.the-m-factor.com/html/specs_3.html

I went to the gun shop/range yesterday to check them out, but the range was super busy so there was a 30 minute wait to try out their rentals so I didn't get to fire them, just handle them.

That's what I'm leaning towards...nice balance between 9mm and .45.

9mm - 19 rounds
.40 - 16 rounds
.45 - 13 rounds

Re: The Gun Thread

Lets be honest, you're never going to shoot anyone with it (which is good!) so just go with the cheapest ammo to plink things at the range with (9mm)
