Question Clutch engagement problems.

I bought a really nice '99 GSX from a guy late August. It's got a ACT 2600 with a Fidanza flywheel. The respectable guy said he changed the master and slave cylinders.

The Problem: Either i engage right off the floor and grind going into gears or i engage way off the floor and have clutch slippage under acceleration. I checked out the vfaq and i did ajust the rod. I turned it out maybe a 1/4 turn or so. It don't take much! It's good then, it'll engage about 1"+ off the floor, about where it should be. By the way i DID tighten the nut. You drive it around for a little while and then she engages WAY off the floor and slips. So i turn the rod in VERY slightly 1/8 turn or so(Tighten the nut) and then it's good for a little while until she's starts engaging off the floor again. I'm really frustrated at it. I'm chasing the problem but can't catch it.

I crawled under the dash and i see no leaks by the master cylinder rod area.

Can somebody give me some suggestions on what the heck to try.

BTW- A buddy and i tried bleeding the clutch on 2 separate occasions with no results.

Thanks!!!

Re: Crazy clutch engagement problems... HELP please.

Could be your slave cylinder, clutch fork, or pivot ball. I wouldn't suspect a worn pedal assembly since its a newer car.

I also would not rule out your master cylinder either, just because its not leaking doesn't mean its not bad. I just replaced one that was bad and it showed no substantial signs of leaking.

Re: Clutch engagement problems.

Thanks Craig, I was thinking the master too. I'm gonna remove the tranny to replace a few synchros that are slightly worn so i can rule out everything in there. The master looks like a real pain to get at.

Did you rebuild yours or just replace it all together?

Re: Clutch engagement problems.

I just replaced the master cylinder with a new one. Mitsubishi wants like 112 dollars or something like that, I got mine from Pep Boys for 55 dollars. Its the Fluke brand which I heard isn't too bad. It has worked great so far and its been two months or more.

Its really not all that bad of a job to do. I have heard that 2Gs are a lot tougher than 1Gs. I did my 1G in about 20 or 30 minutes total time. I have not did one in a 2G, I am sure someone can chime in and tell you how it is to do.

I usually like to use all Mitsubishi parts, however for the price I could get two of the Fluke ones for the price of one of the Mitsubishi ones. People might disagree with this but thats just what I did at the time.

You have been working with electronics too much! The master was a Luke, not a Fluke.
