Honors society/Greek stuff I don't get.

I was invited to join Phi Theta Kappa, an honors society for community colleges. I'm wondering if any of you guys would have some insight as to joining such a thing. I know it's an accomplishment and ya, it's only a 2 year college but I am transferring. They offer scholarships that other students don't have access to and provide opportunities for leadership and community involvement. The thing is, I will be transferring hopefully this spring semester. My questions are:

You think this will help my transfer process go "better"?
Academically, will this help me join Phi Beta Kappa(assuming I continue my gpa trend)?

I do want to point out that I do want to graduate with a BS and honors cause I like to gloat jk . I know it won't help with getting jobs but it's for self achievement. I do know that having a Phi Theta Kappa on your resume is good for a little higher pay in government entry level jobs.

So with all that being said and putting my goals out there. What do you educated guys think?

I feel like unless you hold a leadership role in PTK you really don't have much besides being able to add it to achievements. I suppose the networking and volunteering opportunities are good as well. What do you plan to major in? Where are you planning to go?

I was a part of two organizations like this when I was at Winona State (ALD and NSCS). Would I say I gained anything from these organizations? No. Did I lose anything? No. I still put them on my resume because it looks good.

Keep in mind though too, most of my extra curricular time was spent with my non-academic fraternity, TKE. So could I have gotten more from ALD or NSCS if I had put more effort in to it? Probably. So I guess it depends on what kind of commitment you're looking to make.

How is their Math Program?

I know there applied mathematics is always ranked top 10 in the world for universities.

So I assume pure mathematics is decent? I know they are making strides in their actuarial science degree as well. They also have Masters in Math/Math-Ed/Financial Math and Ph.D programs.

Re: Honors society/Greek stuff I don't get.

Don't join expecting career opportunities or extra perks.

Will it help your transfer process? Potentially. Assuming you don't know anyone in the new school, it could be a way to meet people

Will it help you join PBK? I Googled both of these and they seem like generic honor societies... If you want to join one, at least choose one specific to your major

You didn't mention what you were going to school for... if it's Computer Science, I wouldn't even recommend the honors program. Grades are important (get that 4.0!) but I doubt "graduated with honors" would look better on your resume than some work experience or personal project. Spend the extra effort doing something useful instead

+1. Well put.
Grades and experience are worth infinitely more. Put your time into those instead of an honors society.

Re: Honors society/Greek stuff I don't get.

^ Well those 2 things always came first along with my education.

I was going to join just for exclusivity to scholarships not accessible to other students. I wouldn't mind doing some community involvement as I've already do it with Walgreens and for some classes I've taken. I won't have enough time to try and run and be officer.

I know it won't land me a job but again, like i said, it was for my own personal achievement.

Colin, Double majoring would be awesome but we'll see how it goes.

Well if it's for personal achievement, go for it.
