weird 3rd gear
Ill be driving through the gears, 1st and 2nd are fine.. Then I get to 3rd, and it makes almost like a supercharger type whine that I can hear but alot quieter. Also when I give it gas it jumps forward, then I let off and it jumps back, the knob itself jumps, almost popping itself out of gear. This only started happening after I drove up to moose lake on friday. car was just parked up there til i drove it home tonight at 6. Any suggestions on what this is?

Re: weird 3rd gear
If it is a major change in just one gear, chances are its internal transmission wear, I would rule out shifter cables/bushings beacuse its only in one gear.
Turbos are harder on drivelines, and if your sig is correct, you may have pushed your transmission a bit too far.
I would ask Shep, he may be unfamiliar with your trans, because (I think) its a dodge transmission. he could point you in the right direction however

Alright thanks! Yeah i noticed also that I was really, really low on oil, it wasnt even to the "low" line on the dipstick it was so low, so i added a quart, took her for a drive, and it almost sounds like it has a very very faint whine in 1st as well.
I took it home and sat in the garage for a sec before shutting her off, and gave it a couple 2k revs, and it has a whine in neutral as well.
Do you think it could be fixed simply by adding tranny fluid or oil change (just cuz)?

Re: weird 3rd gear
Congrats for checking your oil, if you only had to add 1qt chances your engine is ok. Dont quote me on this, but most 4 cylinders can still drive on as little 1qt total oil (my beater DD leaks alot of oil, believe me, I had to add 3 qts recently)
How is your transmission fluid level? do you even know how to check it? Hint: there is no dipstick
Some 5-speed transmissions use ATF, some mazdas....chances are you are going to use a GL3 type lube, 85w90 for an example, consult your user manual
There are alot of "if"s with your problem, its too bad you dont have a real DSM. But since you have basically a Neon, you should be able to find a good uesd transmission for cheap.
Good luck, start saving up

Re: weird 3rd gear
Yeah on the diff housing towards the back of the trans there is a rubber plug. The fluid, when the car is level, should be even with the bottom edge of this hole, correct?
How quickly do you go through tranny fluid usually though? Like whats the usual interval that it should be changed and checked? I dont even know if its ever been changed thats why!
Sorry I didnt post back earlier, I was at the cabin again up in moose lake for 6 days! (no i didnt drive my car )

Re: weird 3rd gear
If you fill it as high as that rubber plug, you'll have way too dam much oil in it. That rubber plug is only meant as a vent. You fill it till it's level with the bottom edge of the filler plug hole. Not sure about your car but my '99 GSX is 2.4 quarts.

Re: weird 3rd gear
I put it up on jack stands to check the tranny fluid (still havent checked it though) and my buddy came over to check out the problem with me, and asked to hear the neutral whine, so i started it on the jack stand. keep in mind it was in NEUTRAL when this all happened... The damn wheel started to spin. WTF. The speedo shot up to 20 MPH in neutral, and the wheel spins. I dont know about the passenger wheel though if it was spinning or not cuz it was still on the ground.
It will stop spinning in neutral though as soon as i push down on the clutch. as soon as i take it off though, boom, spins up again. Do I need a whole new clutch assembly, release bearing, etc?
edit: Car wont even go into gear now. It shifts into gear, but when i let out the clutch it just revs and wont move, like clutch isnt even connected it feels like. Anyones help is greatly appreciated. Will buy booze or pay for anyone to come and help me!

Re: weird 3rd gear
It almost feels like when i am in neutral its in 1st gear, cuz if I let out real slow in neutral it kind of moves like 1st gear. I have no idea how to fix something like this though. yes, searched
FOund yesterday that the left inner CV boot is torn to hell. No grease left at all, must of all came out on the way home from the cabin. shoot i cant even drive it. Think this is a big play on the problem/thee problem?

Sounds to me like your tranny is shot.

Re: weird 3rd gear
Do you have a shifter kit bushings... anything of that nature. If ya do when u push the gas and ur knob moves thats normal.
Now the whine... is it LSD?
The CV boot will not make that happen btw. If anything u will hear a clicking noise while turning not a whinning noise in 2nd... Replace it but if ya dont right away its not going to kill anything. Once u hear clicking beware.

Re: weird 3rd gear
I had someone come check everything out, and everything external checked out, he told me it could possibly be a fork or something got loose on me internally and now i cant get it back on to re engage into the right gear. Like the internal linkages, or something along those lines.
I am currently looking for another transmission.
Worst 2 weeks of my life.
What would you say I could find one for? Or how spendy is a rebuild?
Thanks

Re: weird 3rd gear
Look I would rock that tranny till it started to grind. The wheels turning is normal until the liquid gets nice and hot and still might move. Think even in neutral parts in ur tranny are moving. I would take it to a tranny shop and make sure before you buy a new one.

Re: weird 3rd gear
Yeah my car is stuck in gear. I hit the brakes in neutral and it just dies. I know that the wheels moving are normal, but its stuck in a gear.
I just dont feel like getting a tow to a shop, having them tell me the same thing i know, then have to pay the shop for the diagnosis, plus go out and buy a new tranny anyway.

Re: weird 3rd gear
This kinda reminds me of when I destroyed a synchro in my 7. It would always whine, then started to grind. It almost seems like something on the top rack in the tranny is lodged in the dog gears, causing the assembly to spin, even in neutral. Picking up another tranny is probably the best idea. If you haven't already, get rid of the stupid modular clutch. It has some issues of it's own that isn't gear friendly.
