taking engine out...

hey everyone...i was wondering if i can just pull out my engine without the transmission. i already pulled the head (i know i know...mistake) but i want to pull the bottom now. i read something similar on dsmtalk.com but not to many details. if anyone can give me further directions on how or any details, i will greatly appreciate it.

Re: taking engine out...

What year car? FWD or AWD?

I think it would be much easier to pull the tranny too. I have never tried pulling the engine on its own though, just seems like it would be easier to do them both.

Re: taking engine out...

it's really not much more work to do both. The tranny is held to the motor, and has only 1 tranny mount. The motor you can pull without taking the tranny off, but you still need to pull the axles (atleast the driver's side one) and alot of the other stuff. In other cars i've done this on (honduhs, and saturns) taking the motor out by itself was easy enough and I'd leave the tranny. But, it's not much more work to do the tranny and the motor..it's up to you.

Re: taking engine out...

I tried this method on my 92 laser, and it was very close but just too tight. Ended up bolting everything back together and pulling tranny and engine out together. I think it's possible to seperate in the car if you reallly work at it, but it's much easier to pull both as one.

Re: taking engine out...

Pull them together. It's MUCH easier to take the tranny off and put it back on when the engine is out of the car rather than in the car.

Yeah, I'm with them. In my experience it would seem easier to me to take the head off with the manifolds, THEN pull the block/tranny. Thats just me though, I would rather take more time to do it easier than less time and have to reach all under the intake manifold to unbolt/unplug shit.
