Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

i got my evo 3 intake, intake pipe, fuel rail, and coil bracket back from powdercoating. I spent most of the afternoon putting the parts back on. I started by plumbing my vaccume pump to the brake booster and would have finished wireing it if I hadn't misplaced my relay and bought the wrong size spade terminal ends. then when pulling the harness out of the way so I could get the intake on I found that the wires that go to the knock sensor were broken off and twisted together some time in the cars past so I spent some time fixing them up right with solder and heat shrink tubeing. After I got the intake back on I ran the wireing harness under it to hide most of the wires. it is kinda a pain in the ass but should make it look alot cleaner. I am still undecided if I want to keep the rewd plug wires and coupler or go all black. I really want to stop spending money on parts that don't make it faster so I am leaning twards keeping the red.

Black plug wires

I like the blacked out look for sure. What size black coupler do to need? I believe I have a 3" to 2.5" you could have to help you not spend money non-go fast parts

It's also a straight black coupler so looking at it again it may not work.

Also I seen you bought the same nittos 555Rs I'm currently looking at have you test fit them yet? Just wondering how they fill the wheel wells.

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

The car has been running good for the last month or so. I even drove it to Brainard lastwweekend and it was a smooth trip. Yesterday it desired to remind me that it was a DSM. It took. It into town and on the way back it started to misfire. After looking at it for a few hours I found that it threw a rocker on one of the intake valves. I think the lifter collapsed and allowed the rocker to eject during a pull I made right before the misfiring started. There is a slight scratch on the cam lobe, but no other real damage I am planning on replacing the lifter and and putting the rocker back in, and hoping for the best.

No I'll take the blame on this one, even though I have no idea how the clamp got in there. It just seams like a DSM to be running perfect one minute the drop a cylinder the next. The car ran for over 600 miles with the clamp in the motor So I guess these DSMs are pretty badass.

Indeed. Frankly I think they are some of the best engineered cars from that era when you think of what we are asking out of the original design parameters.

It was sitting in the oil return hole between on the exhaust side between cylinder 2 & 3. I pulled it out with a magnet it is undamaged. Hopefully it is a easy fix I want it to be in top shape for Proving Grounds.

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

Well, no such think as a easy fix i guess. I made a spring compessor after work yesterday and put the rocker back in with the old lifter. The engine still runs the same. At this point I assume the valve is bent so i did a compression test. My compression tester doesnt read right but it verified that there is no compression on cly 2. I am going to borrow my buddies tester tonight to verify ny results and I will probly be pulling the head tonight after work.
Here are a fe pics of my homemade valve spring compressor I am going to try to find a longer bolt at work to elimincate the two I had to weld together. I am pretty happy with it for making it from parts from the hardwar racks at work.

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

I would imagine the valve bent and caused the rocker arm to fall off. Did you overrev it at all? Hopefully the piston is ok, then it would just be a valve and valve guide.

That is what I was thinking. Or when the rocker came out it held the valve open and it hit the piston. I haven't over reved it, but I did notice more lifter tick then normal the last time I drove it before this happened.

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

I found the problem.

I pulled both valves on this cylinder and the one withg out the clamp hanging out of it is bent. If anyone has some 2g intake valves for sale let me know I really want to have the car back together for proving grounds,
