I think Torrents are a much better way to download.

You would need to use a tracker to be able to download the files. I use BitTorrent++.

The best place I find torrents(downloads) at is
http://suprnova.org. You can also try
http://www.torrentlinks.com
The draw back is you get what is posted. There is no real search functionality that I have found.
This is not recomended for a dial up.
