The filter should be protecting the mass air flow sensor from any dirt and particles that may make it dirty... So if you have a hole in the filter or something else then just wipe it down, I wouldnt touch the honeycombs at all.

The filter is in place and in very good condition. I refreshed the filter last week and saw the honeycomb pieces which looked like they were coated slightly with old K&N oil. Didn't know if I should or should not try to clean them with carb cleaner or whatnot.
