I really cant tell how the oil was. When I drained it, it was mixed with water. So it was pretty nasty when it came out. And it has sat for the last two years.

As far as me and the machine guy can tell, this motor has never been taken apart. So the bearings might not look the greatest.

However, I am pretty sure this guy was running the car lean. He was venting to atmosphere, but when he did that, he never closed the BOV return on the Intake tube. He just had a cheapo filter on it. so it was sucking in more air behind the MAF. So i dunno if that would contribute to anything on the bearings.

Re: My Newest project....

Well, finally starting to get somewhere on this car. After finding all the wrong stuff on the motor, I started getting parts together.

Got the block back from the machine shop. Bores where in factory specs, just needed a finish hone. Crank was ok, rod journals did have to be turned.

I ordered ACL mains and rod bearings from MAP. Got them earlier this week. However the mains were wrong. MAP came through and got ahold of ACL for me, and got me another set coming. Very happy with that.

With the water that was in the bores, and the one bent rod, I was not wanting to use the rest of them. Seems as how i am not doing an all out build, and still on somewhat of a budget, I picked up a set of EVO 8 pistons/rods.

So right now just waiting on my main bearings to show up and than I can start assembly.

So tonight I just finished up cleaning up the block.

Looks all pretty, for now. lol.

Re: My Newest project....

Well. Bit the bullet and bought Link V3 full tonight. It was spendy, but like I said, I wanna do this car right.

So just waiting on the main bearings and studs to put the bottom end together. I ended up ordering main studs cause I misplaced the main bolts I had. Once i get the studs installed, I will torque them, than take it back to the machine shop to have it checked out. I know they aren't needed for my setup, but they aren't spendy so i went for it.

I was hoping to have parts today, but forgot it was Presidents day. So no mail for me. Oh well. Just gotta be patient.

^ I agree!

As for link v3 you'll love it. I had it in my old talon and it was definitely worth the money!

I'll admit. With most my dsm's I have just thrown in a wideband, cranked the boost up, and watched the wideband. I have never actually taken the step at getting some sort of tuning on them. I guess I just got lucky those times.

But this time I wanna get the most out of the car. So i knew I was gonna have to have some sort of tuning.

Re: My Newest project....

With my old talon I started out with an safc and then went to link and link was so worth it. My current talon is running an aem right now but will most likely eventually switch to link

Re: My Newest project....

Maybe I'm wrong, but I was sure you were supposed to line bore/hone, when using ARP main studs. Something about how the studs apply more force than the main bolts and can distort the bore size. I think that might be a "you should" instead of a "you need to" type thing though.

Re: My Newest project....

I would highly recommend getting it line honed. My engine builder didn't do it on my first engine and it crank walked. Yes it was a 6 bolt. 2nd one I built myself and was line honed and no issues.

You should do a lot of things when building a motor. Most people don't do a lot of them. Pretty much what gives DSMs their rep.

Plastigaging, however, is something I'm anal about. No need to line hone if it clearances fine.

Re: My Newest project....

Once the main studs are in and torqued it will be. Going to the machine shop. They said they would check it. I have read both sides of the line bore/don't line bore stories. And have just decided to have the machine shop take care of it.

Re: My Newest project....

Ok, so after checking over what I already have and what I need for my car. The biggest thing I am missing right now is a turbo.

The car had on it an Ebay 16G that was leaking oil like crazy. And the only other turbo I have laying around is the 13g? off my Auto 1g. And I know the 14b is an upgrade on a stock 2g.

So my question is, do I try to find a 14b or go bigger? I would really like to have a turbo possible of 300 whp. But want something thats fairly quick spooling.

This build is a mostly stock 2g rebuild. Except evo 8 pistons/rods. I am really new to the this part. I was trying to find some reading on turbo compressor maps and what not, but thats all over my head at this moment. So any help or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: My Newest project....

Just find an MHI 16G or send your ebay turbo to turbo lab for a rebuild.

Re: My Newest project....

a 14b might be able to get close to 300whp on a FWD car like this. Otherwise I've seen a lot of 16g's go for 3-400 bucks on t00ners lately.

Re: My Newest project....

Well. missed out on that one.

Now, I am not saying I only want a MHI turbo. I am ok with looking at other ones. Just no sure on what to look for.
