It could be something as simple as shot solenoids or a valve body issue, but you never know until you take it out, it's actually pretty damn hard to diagnose unless you remove it. Sure, there are things you can do to almost 100% diagnose it with it still in the car, but you just never know.

Try driving it with manual gears. If it goes into each gear without and fuss and holds, then you probably need a new band or a clutch pack, which would point to a rebuild. It sucks you can't just replace a band or a clutch pack, but the old fluid would destroy new parts.
thanks for the reply. thats good info to know. im still researching options at this point, cause the car is still driveable.

No, it's not your fault, but now your transmission is going through a rough breakup with your engine. lol

If it's still a problem when I'm back in August, I'd gladly be willing to help ya out. I love transmissions.

the car is still driveable, i just have to baby it until i can get up to freeway speeds. i might hit you up when you get back just to see if you can diagnose it with all that freak knowledge in your head. thanks!
