Crank shaft end play measurement is for checking well-worn motors to see if the thrust bearing clearance is out of spec. Setting the thrust bearing alignment/clearance is like JET posted. I usually bang it back and forth a few times with a rubber mallet with the caps barely tight and then torque the caps down after hitting it from the clutch side.
