Was your tint professional tint or cheap autozone type junk?... I bought some professional 38% tint and haven't been bothered by even the worst cops around here and in MN when i've been there. Did the sides myself and had the back done by a professional shop. Quite frankly, anything less than -38% is asking for trouble and is a hazard IMO. I've driven a truck that had 20% and it was hard to see out in city light driving at night. Attached is a picture of my GSX with 38% sides & back. Why you'd need to go darker is beyond me.
