^^ Are you sure about that? I don't know if it's the same, but I had a little 50cc pocketbike. When I took the exhaust off, I gained a little low in the rpms, but lost alot up top. Put the exhaust back on, and got my top end back.

If that was a 2 cycle engine (which I bet it was), they actually do benefit from backpressure, I believe. I know what you are talking about though, my friend's 80cc scooter exhaust broke off at the flange once and we re-welded it and it was faster. Took it off and saw some bumps of metal from welding on the inside of the pipe. The turbulence those bumps caused probably added backpressure and thus, a little more power.
