285/50/18's or 255/55/18's

OK, so im struggling to decide on some tires for my 18x8.5 OZ wheels. fpr the Dakota.
Im going to "assume" 285s would fit a 8.5 wheel, as 275s fit an 8 inch wheel.
Now with that said, I wanted 285/45s, as that would be the same height of 28.0 as the stock 255/65/15s, but I cant find any. I WONT spend more then $150 per tire.

So I found a set of Nitto 285/50/18s. for $136 ea. Picked up and installed at the local Discount tire.
Over all height of 29.2 inches

Tirerack reccomends 255/55/18, and I found a set of Kuhmos for a great price, $104 each, plus shipping and mounting from tire rack.
Overall height of 29.0 inches
But I really would like something wider.

So whatcha guys think? Any suggestions. 285s too wide?
Thanks
Chris
